2024-25 Carabao Cup outright odds and favourites
Liverpool
Even when Liverpool trailed Tottenham after the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final, the Reds remained the favourites to life the trophy. Arne Slot has had a wonderful start to life as a manager in England, blowing the country apart. They look on course for the Premier League title and could still win the Quadruple, still going in the FA Cup and Champions League.
In the Carabao Cup, Liverpool have had to face four Premier League sides on their quest to the final. It started in comfortable fashion, with a 5-1 thrashing of West Ham United at Anfield in the third round. Liverpool’s next two matches were a lot closer, though, with a 1-2 victory against Southampton and a 2-3 win over Brighton and Hove Albion. There was another thumping in the semi-final too. Although Liverpool lost the first leg 1-0 to Tottenham, the Reds got their own back with a heavy 4-0 win at Anfield. They’re now in the EFL Cup final for the 15th time, at least five more than any other club. This could the 10th occasion a club has retained the trophy.
Newcastle
For the second time in three seasons, Newcastle are Carabao Cup finalists. The Magpies were runners-up in 2022-23, beaten by Manchester United at Wembley. But they did have a bit of misfortune for that game, with first-choice goalkeeper Nick Pope suspended. Backup Martin Dubravka was cup-tied, having played for Man Utd earlier in the tournament. So third-choice Loris Karius had to go in goal.
Newcastle have also had a pretty tough route to the final. The Magpies started in the second found and needed penalties to beat Premier League high-flyers Nottingham Forest. They did beat League Two’s Wimbledon in the third round, a narrow 1-0 win, but it’s been all-Premier League opposition since. In fact, the win over Wimbledon set up a run of London opponents for Newcastle in the Carabao Cup. Chelsea and Brentford were beaten at St James’ Park, before Arsenal lost 4-0 on aggregate in the semi-finals.
