Spain left it late again to claim victory, this time beating Belgium 2-1 in the 2026 World Cup quarter-final to set up a mouthwatering semi-final clash with France.
The first half started as quite a cagey affair, with Spain seeing plenty of the ball but chances being few and far between. Spain continued to build momentum and this eventually paid off after 30 minutes when Fabian Ruiz was able to finish from close range after Thaibaut Courtois parried Dani Olmo’s shot back into danger.
Spain looked the more likely side to score following the opener but it was Belgium that found the net 11 minutes later. Charles De Ketelaere was able to stoop to get to a cross from Timothy Castagne and head past Unai Simon, with the Spanish keeper conceding for the first time in the competition.
The second half started similarly to the first, with Spain dominating possession but failing to create the clearcut chances they needed to retake the lead. Belgium held strong, restricting Spain in the final third and extra-time looked as though it would be arriving in Los Angeles.
Mikel Merino had other ideas though. Pau Cubarsi shot from distance and Senne Lammens, a second half substitute for the injured Courtois, spilled the ball, leaving Merino to fire into the roof of the net and grab Spain victory late on for the second game in a row.
