Scotland vs Brazil team news and predicted lineups

Scotland and Brazil at the 2026 World Cup on Wednesday at 11pm (UK time) both looking to secure a spot in the knockout stages.

Steve Clarke’s men opened their World Cup campaign in the best possible way, beating Haiti 1-0 to sit top of the group. But they have dropped down to third after losing to Morocco last time out. A win over Brazil will be enough for Scotland to reach the last-32, but they’ll be hoping to secure a spot regardless of the result.

Brazil sit top of the group on goal difference as things stand, and they’ll be hoping to keep it that way come full-time. The five-time world champions opened their World Cup with a draw against Morocco, having to come from behind. But they bounced back in their next game to beat Haiti 3-0 and put one foot in the knockout stages. Due to eight third-placed sides going through, Brazil are unlikely to be eliminated all together.

This will be the 11th game between Brazil and Scotland, and the South American side are still unbeaten. They’ve won eight of the 10 meetings so far, including four matches at the World Cup.

Scotland vs Brazil team news

Scotland team news

Clarke made minor changes in personnel and system between Scotland’s first two World Cup matches. And he’s likely to stick to the formation he used against Morocco, even though they lost. A 4-4-1-1 will allow Scotland to be slightly more defensive, while utilising Scott McTominay and Che Adams in attack. But there may still be changes.

Andy Robertson is likely to start despite being booked last time out, leaving him a suspension risk. The back five should remain the same, with Aaron Hickey still not in training after a slight injury. So Nathan Patterson may continue at right-back, with Jack Hendry and Grant Hanley the centre-backs. There may be a couple of changes in midfield.

Lewis Ferguson wasn’t part of training on Sunday and remains a doubt, so he may be replaced in the team. Kenny McLean will be lining up to replace him, keeping McTominay further forward. Ben Gannon-Doak could return to the right side of the midfield, with John McGinn swapping over to the left. Kieran Tierney played there last time out, but had to come off injured.

Brazil team news

Carlo Ancelotti changed his team around after a disappointing first game, with a lot of success. So he may opt to remain largely unchanged from the win against Haiti. With qualification hard to miss, Douglas Santos may get a rest in the final game, due to his risk of suspension. Alex Sandro can come in to replace him at left-back, with Danilo remaining on the right. But Ancelloti won’t want to change the defence too much, with top spot important to secure.

The midfield trio is likely to remain the same, consisting of Casemiro, Lucas Paqueta and Bruno Guimaraes. Paqueta had a much better game playing as the left-sided No.8 against Haiti, compared to his No.10 outting in the opening match. Any rotation to the midfield to save legs will likely come as the game goes on.

Brazil’s front three looked dangerous too, thanks to the introduction of Matheus Cunha. The Manchester United man scored twice against Haiti, a big difference from Igor Thiago’s poor showing vs Morocco. He’ll be flanked by Vinicius Jr, who has scored in both games so far, and potentially Rayan. The latter came off the bench to replace Raphinha who suffered a hamstring injury against Moroco. It means Endrick will have to make do with another substitute appearance. Neymar has completed his first training session, but is unlikely to start.
