Portugal took a big step towards qualifying for the knockout stages of the 2026 World Cup thanks to their 5-0 win over Uzbekistan.

The game was all about Cristiano Ronaldo, who made history in the first half. Ronaldo went into the game one goal behind Eusebio as Portugal’s all-time leading goalscorer at World Cups. He had levelled that tally by the sixth minute, with a cool first-time finish — having been frustrated in his first game.

Uzbekistan fans will have been fearing the worst as that goal went in, knowing they needed to stay level as long as possible to gain momentum and confidence. But Portugal went 2-0 up 10 minutes later, from a direct free-kick. Ronaldo stood over the ball and was eyeing up the shot, but it was a ruse as Nuno Mendes curled a low effort into the bottom corner.

Ronaldo did get his second goal towards the end of the first half, making history by capping off a quick break. But that wasn’t before Uzbekistan had a well-taken goal disallowed for a foul in the buildup.

Portugal eased off in the second half but they did still manage to extend their lead. It came from another set-piece, and was an own goal from goalkeeper Abduvokhid Nematov — an unfortunate deflect after a bit of pinball in the box. Rafael Leao put the gloss on the win late on.

The result puts Portugal top of the group, albeit having played a game more than Colombia. Uzbekistan’s World Cup hopes, meanwhile, are hanging in the balance.
