Spain left it late to overcome neighbours, Portugal, with Mikel Merino’s stoppage time goal proving to be the difference as Spain claimed a 1-0 victory.
The opening 45 minutes didn’t have many big chances but Spain were able to carve out some opportunities, with Mikel Oyarzabal firing wide when he really should’ve at least hit the target. Portugal’s best chance came through Nuno Mendes, who saw his deflected effort smash the crossbar.
Neither side really took the game to their opponents in the opening period and the game meandered to half time with neither side able to find a goal.
The second half started in much the same way, with neither side dominating. Portugal, in particular, were guilty of being very relaxed in their play but neither team really went through the gears to try and find the winner.
The match looked destined for extra-time but substitute, Mikel Merino had other ideas. He was able to finish off a good move following a quick free kick in the first minute of stoppage time. It was a goal that game too late in the game for Portugal to respond and Spain were able to book their place in the quarter-final. They will take on either United States or Belgium in the next round.
