France confirmed top spot in Group I at the 2026 World Cup thanks to their 4-1 win over Norway.
Most of the damage was done in the first half, thanks to a hat-trick from Ousmane Dembele. Norway manager Stale Solbakken was clearly prioritising rest over top spot, making 10 changes to his team. And it showed early on, with Kylian Mbappe going close inside 20 seconds.
France had a lot of joy down their right flank, with Dembele up against the rotated in Fredrik Bjorkan. The first goal came in space left by Bjorkan, which Mbappe exploited with a pass to Dembele. Dembele turned Bjorkan inside and out before finishing coolly with his left foot. He had a second by the 20th minute, again assisted by Mbappe, but this time cutting inside and curling a shot with his left foot.
Norway got a goal back seconds later through Thelo Aasgaard, but Dembele completed his hat-trick just after the half-hour mark. It was another finish akin to his second, cutting onto his left foot.
There wasn’t as much action in the second half though it did start with a missed penalty by Jorgen Strand Larsen. Desire Doue scored a fourth for France deep into injury time, putting the gloss on the victory.
France must now wait to see who they face in the last-32, with a tie against the third-place side from Groups D, F or G, coming up. Norway know they’ll take on Ivory Coast.
