Kylian Mbappe becomes France’s all-time top goalscorer

Kylian Mbappe has become the all-time top goalscorer for France‘s men’s national team.

The Frenchman has now scored 58 goals, moving one clear of Olivier Giroud (57) who had held the record since December 2022. Fittingly, Giroud also broke Thierry Henry’s record at a World Cup, adding five more goals before calling time on his international career.

Mbappe broke the record in stunning fashion, firing into the top corner from 30 yards in the 96th minute of France’s 3-1 victory over Senegal.

The goal also saw him become France’s all-time World Cup goalscorer with 14 goals, overtaking Just Fontaine, who scored an incredible 13 goals at the 1958 tournament.

Kylian Mbappe’s World Cup record

Mbappe isn’t a flat-track bully. He scores when it matters for France. The striker has scored 14 of his 58 France goals at World Cups, and will have the all-time competition record in his sights. Mbappe scored four goals at this first World Cup, including a brace in the 4-3 win over Argentina en route to France lifting the trophy. He also scored the fourth goal in the final against Croatia.

Four years later, though Mbappe really thrived. He scored eight goals in Qatar with another three coming against Argentina. Unfortunately it wouldn’t lead to a World Cup win this time, with his hat-trick coming as France lost the final. Before that, though, Mbappe had scored brraces against Denmark and Poland, the latter securing a 3-1 win in the last-16.

And he’s carried that incredible goalscoring form in World Cup 2026, scoring twice in France’s opening game against Senegal. That brace puts him just two goals shy of Miroslav Klose’s all-time record of 16 World Cup goals.

Kylian Mbappe’s European Championship record

Now, Mbappe hasn’t had as much luck at the European Championships. He has played nine games across Euro 2020 and 2024 but only scored one goal. That came at Euro 2024, an equaliser against Poland in France’s final group stage game to seal second spot. It was a tough tournament for France, though, and that was the first goal a French player had scored at Euro 2024 — in their third match.

Kylian Mbappe’s competitive record

Mbappe may not have scored much at the European Championships, but he more than did his bit to get France to the tournaments. He has scored 12 goals in 13 games in European qualifiers, including four against the Netherlands. And the Netherlands are Mbappe’s favourite opponent, netting six goals in total against the Oranje. Mbappe has only failed to score in five of his 13 European Championship qualifiers, but in two of those games he has still provided an assist.

It’s a different story in World Cup qualifying. Mbappe has played 16 World Cup qualifiers for France, scoring 11 goals. But 10 of those goals have come in his past six World Cup qualifiers — after only netting one in his first 10 matches. Mbappe scored in all four of his games in qualifying for this summer’s tournament, including a brace against Ukraine.

Mbappe has scored nine goals in 21 Uefa Nations League matches, across both the group stages and finals. He helped France secure their first Nations League victory in 2021, with a goal against Spain in the final. Mbappe then scored against Spain again last year, though this time as a losing semi-finalist.

Kylian Mbappe’s friendly record

International friendlies have decreased slightly over the years, but Mbappe has still managed to play 25 of them. And he has scored 11 goals. Some of those friendlies have seen Mbappe come off at half-time in big wins, or not try to test himself too much to keep fit. But it means that Mbappe has testing himself, and succeeding, against a variety of opponents.
