France eased to their second win at the 2026 tournament against Iraq despite the tournament’s first weather delay holding the game up for some time in Philadelphia.
A Kylian Mbappe brace and Ousmane Dembele’s first ever tournament goal were enough to put les Bleus on six points from six games.
Unsurprisingly, France raced out of the blocks, piling the pressure on the Iraqi defence. A scramble in the box almost allowed Michael Olise to take the lead.
It didn’t take long for the deadlock to be broken. After a handful of chances, Kylian Mbappe opened the scoring with a thunderous left-footed strike from the edge of box just before the quarter of an hour mark.
Despite the pressure and the scoreline, Iraq did start finding a way into the game. Ali Al Hamadi put a header just wide under pressure from William Saliba as heavy rain descended upon Philadelphia.
At any point though, it seemed les Bleus could find a second. Mbappe was always the man most involved, even trying his luck from the half-way line at one stage.
An extended half-time break followed due to adverse weather delaying the restart of the second half.
When we finally got back underway, it didn’t take long for Mbappe to double his tally. A change of goalkeeper didn’t stop Iraq from making a terrible error as Ahmed Basil miscontrolled a short goal passed to him which allowed Ousmane Dembele to steal in and lay it on a plate for the Real Madrid forward.
Michael Olise had a dinked effort hit the bar after an extraordinary piece of skill from Mbappe in the box saw him nutmeg an Iraqi defender in the box and play a short pass into the feet of the Bayern Munich man. He was desperately unlucky not to make it three. Adrien Rabiot headed a guilt-edged chance just wide a moment after.
Dembele was the man to make it three. Olise found the PSG forward free in the box with a lovely pass with the outside of his boot and the Ballon d’Or holder applied the finishing touch, firing into the bottom corner for his first ever World Cup goal.
Iraq had a couple of chances after Dembele’s third, Ali Al-Hammadi coming closest to earning a consolation as he stretched to meet a deep cross and guide it just wide of Mike Maignan’s left post.
Mbappe should’ve got his hat-trick in the final minute of the 90 as he raced away from Iraq defence but couldn’t apply the finish with what was his final touch of the game.
