Egypt have named their squad for the 2026 World Cup with the African side bidding to make a big impact at the tournament.
Hossam Hassan has been in charge of the Pharaohs since 2024 and has named the 26 men that he thinks will bring glory to an Egyptian side that has been starved of success in recent years.
There are a few players within the Egypt squad that will be instantly recognisable but none more so than Mohamed Salah. The Pharaohs’ skipper leaves Liverpool this summer as a genuine Premier League legend having scored 257 goals in 442 appearances in all competitions for the Reds.

Despite being the most successful nation in Afcon history with seven wins, Egypt have flattered to deceive on the world stage throughout their history, having never won any of their previous seven matches at World Cup finals.
And it has to be said that while there is some attacking quality, this does not appear to be a vintage Pharaohs squad, with star man Mohamed Salah starting to come towards the latter stages of his career and fewer well-known names than their last World Cup squad in 2018.
Some fans will perhaps be surprised to see Nantes forward Mostafa Mohamed and ex-Arsenal star Mohamed Elneny omitted from the final 26, but boss Hossam Hassan has defended his decision to pack the squad with players from the domestic league – only nine of the final squad play their club football outside of Egypt.

Three players to look out for this summer
Mohamed Salah (Liverpool)
A man who needs no introduction, Mohamed Salah or ‘the Egyptian King’ as he was affectionately known at Anfield during his several years as a Liverpool player, remains the talisman for his nation. With 67 goals from his 116 caps he is Egypt’s all-time record goalscorer and unsurprisingly he will wear the armband for his team again this summer.
This will only be Salah’s second World Cup but given that he turns 34 on the day of his team’s opening game against Belgium, it’s fair to suggest that his powers are ever so slightly on the wane. That doesn’t mean he won’t still be the biggest attacking threat for his country and he still possesses the ability to be a match-winner as Liverpool saw this season with his 12 goals and nine assists in all competitions even in a much-reduced role.
Omar Marmoush (Manchester City)
When Salah does eventually retire, it’s not difficult to figure out who the face of this Egypt national team will be. Having only made his debut five years ago, Omar Marmoush has now become Salah’s main support act, scoring 11 times in his first 48 caps while establishing himself as a star of European football originally with Eintracht Frankfurt in Germany and more recently in the Premier League with Manchester City.
Although he hasn’t enjoyed the best first full season with the Citizens, Marmoush is a versatile forward capable of beating opponents, creating chances and scoring goals. If opposition defences pay too much attention to Salah, they may fall into the trap of allowing Marmoush enough time and space to cause them some serious damage at this summer’s World Cup.
Mohamed Abdelmonem (OGC Nice)
Having joined OGC Nice from Al Ahly in 2024, Mohamed Abdelmonem has suffered an incredibly difficult year since sustaining an ACL injury in a win over PSG in April 2025. That injury has kept him sidelined for the entire year for the Ligue 1 side but tellingly, he was fit enough to feature in the recent pre-tournament warm-up win over Russia, managing 45 minutes in that game.
While Yasser Ibrahim and Ramy Rabia are capable and experienced defenders, Abdelmonem’s aerial strength and ability to read the game do lift the Egyptian’s defensive stability to another level. If he’s fit enough to start from the off against Belgium, there’s no doubt that Hossam Hassan will have more faith in his team’s ability to cause an upset against the Red Devils and perhaps qualify for the knock-out stages.
