Colombia secured top spot in Group K after a goalless draw with Portugal, with the South Americans producing the better performance despite being denied by a combination of excellent goalkeeping and the tightest of offside calls.
Nestor Lorenzo’s side started brightly and enjoyed the majority of the possession throughout the contest, regularly working their way through Portugal’s midfield and asking questions of Roberto Martinez’s side. Jhon Arias was at the heart of much of Colombia’s attacking play, while Jhon Cordoba forced Diogo Costa into an excellent early save.
Portugal gradually grew into the first half and created a couple of openings of their own, but Costa proved to be their standout performer as Colombia continued to pile on the pressure after the break. The Cafeteros finished with 26 shots and six efforts on target, dominating the attacking statistics without finding the breakthrough.
It looked as though Colombia had finally found the winning goal in stoppage time when Davinson Sanchez headed home from close range, only for a lengthy VAR review to rule the defender marginally offside. It was a cruel ending for the group winners, who had done more than enough to claim all three points.
The draw was enough to confirm Colombia as Group K winners, while Portugal progressed as runners-up despite a below-par display. On the balance of play, Colombia will head into their Round of 32 tie with Ghana full of confidence, while Portugal’s knockout tie with Croatia may throw up a few more concerns for Martinez’s men.
