Cape Verde are one of the new faces on display at the 2026 World Cup, with the Blue Sharks set to make their bow on the biggest stage.
Bubista’s side qualified for the finals for the first time, after topping a CAF qualifying group ahead of Mohamed Salah’s Egypt.
They face a baptism of fire, though, with European champions and tournament favourites Spain drawn alongside them in Group H.
Cape Verde route to the World Cup
Cape Verde’s qualification for the World Cup was a shock in itself. They were one of just three second seeds in the CAF qualification campaign to secure their spot at the tournament. And CAF is arguably the toughest qualification campaign around. But Cape Verde were excellent, winning seven of their 10 qualifying games, only losing once. The Blue Sharks finished four points clear of Cameroon, condemning the Indomitable Lions to the play-offs. That was even with a 4-1 away defeat to Cameroon in just the third round of fixtures.

Cape Verde face the toughest two teams in their group in their opening matches. The Blue Sharks open against Spain on 15th June, before facing Uruguay on 21st June. They close the group stage on 27th June against Saudi Arabia.

At the age of 36, this could be Ryan Mendes’ last major tournament for Cape Verde. And he’ll be dreaming of making history. He’s a winger too, with a few spells through the middle.

Sidny Cabral is a new arrival at Benfica, joining midway through the season. But he’ll be hoping to continue his previous form to build up to the World Cup. Cabral has also provided five assists to go alongside his six goals, though a good chunk did come as a wing-back for Estrela.

Jamiro Monteiro is a battling midfielder, perhaps a bit too battling at times. He has already served a two-game suspension for PEC Zwolle in the Eredivisie for a red card picking up after just two minutes of their 2-0 defeat to Go Ahead Eagles in September. But that is also the only card he’s received in the league this season. Monteiro has made 33 tackles in the Eredivisie so far, committing just 14 fouls.

There aren’t too many young players bursting onto the scene for Cape Verde at the moment. But Telmo Arcanjo is one of the their youngest at the tournament, turning 25 during the tournament in April. The defender plies his trade with Vitoria de Guimaraes, making 57 appearances for the Portuguese club.

Bubista is a former Cape Verde international, who took charge of the national team in 2020. He had had previous spells as an assistant, in between senior club roles. Cape Verde have grown a lot under Bubista, reaching back-to-back Africa Cup of Nations in 2021 and 2025 — reaching the quarter-finals in the latter.
