Everton vs Newcastle referee: Craig Pawson’s history with both clubs

Everton and Newcastle United face off in the Premier League on Saturday at 5:30pm, with Craig Pawson set to referee.

This will be Pawson’s eighth Premier League game as referee this season, one of the more-utilised officials in England’s top flight. He has already refereed both Everton and Newcastle this season.

Pawson has overseen two of Newcastle’s Premier League games, with one league and one cup match for Everton.

Everton go into this match off the back of a big win, lifting them up to 11th in the table. Newcastle, are three points and three places back in 14th, despite their important victory last weekend.

Craig Pawson’s Everton record

Pawson has refereed 31 Everton games across all competitions to date. And they’ve not had a good record. The Toffees have lost over half of their matches with Pawson in the middle. A 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest last season ended a run of nine games without victory for Everton under Pawson’s watch, stretching back to May 2022. Interestingly, the last home game Everton won with Pawson as referee came against Newcastle in March 2022.

What happened when Craig Pawson last refereed Everton?

Pawson was the man in the middle for Everton’s 3-0 home defeat to Tottenham Hotspur last month. He only showed two yellow cards, both to Everton players. James Garner was booked for a foul, while Jack Grealish was cautioned for dissent, unhappy with the lack of further punishment after he was fouled by Rodrigo Bentancur. Pawson awarded 17 fouls in total, with nine going against Everton and eight going their way.

Craig Pawson’s Newcastle record

Pawson has overseen 40 Newcastle games to date, only officiating two teams more during his refeering career. Across those matches, Pawson has sent off five Newcastle players, showing no team more red cards. The four straight red cards is the most of any team. The Mapgies have had mixed results too, winning 14, drawing 13 and losing 13. But they haven’t won any of the past five, including their last trip to Everton, a goalless draw at the start of last season.

What happened when Craig Pawson last refereed Newcastle?

Newcastle’s 2-1 defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion, with Pawson as referee, brought very little incident. There was just one card in the match, shown to Dan Burn for dissent after a late foul. The fouls were evenly split too, with nine apiece.

What should we expect from Craig Pawson?

Pawson has been the most lenient referee in the Premier League this season. He’s shown just 16 cards across his seven games, averaging only 2.2 per match. Pawson’s only red card did come in a Newcastle game, though, as he sent off Aston Villa‘s Ezri Konsa on the opening weekend of the season. He has also averaged 10.2 fouls per card, again the most-lenient in the division.
