Arsenal vs Everton referee: Andy Madley’s history with both clubs

Arsenal and Everton face off in the Premier League on Saturday at 5:30pm, with Andy Madley set to referee.

This will be Madley’s 16th Premier League game as a referee this season, placing him around the middle for officials. Two of those matches have seen him referee Everton, but this will be Madley’s first Arsenal game of the campaign.

Arsenal are looking to consolidate their lead at the top of the Premier League table, while Everton will have European qualification in their sights.

Andy Madley’s Arsenal record

Madley hasn’t been in charge of Arsenal too many times, with this being just his eighth match across all competitions. Four of the previous seven have come in the Premer League, with Arsenal winning just one. The Gunners are winless in their past two games with Madley in the middle, including an FA Cup third-round defeat to Manchester United last season. That came despite Arsenal winning a penalty and Man Utd going down to 10 men.

What happened when Andy Madley last refereed Arsenal?

Madley was the man in the middle for Arsenal’s goalless draw with Nottingham Forest at the City Ground last season. It was a pretty uneventful game with just one yellow card apiece. And they were both for fouls inside the opening five minutes, which may had led fans to worry about a card-heavy match.

Andy Madley’s Everton record

Everton are one of Madley’s most-refereed teams. This will be his 23rd Toffees game across all competitions. He has been very busy in those matches too. Madley has shown one red card and awarded three penalties in his Everton matches, with two spot-kicks coming against the Toffees. And Everton have only won nine of their 22 games with Madley in the middle so far, losing 10.

What happened when Andy Madley last refereed Everton?

Madley’s last Everton game was an eventful one. The Toffees were beaten by Bournemouth last month, but took a first-half lead through a penalty. They conceded twice just after the hour-mark and their hopes of a comeback were hurt by Jake O’Brien’s sending off for a professional foul. Madley showed six cards in total, including one to Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola.

What should we expect from Andy Madley?

Madley is an interesting referee. He is one of five referees to have shown at least three red cards in the Premier League this season. But only six referees have averaged fewer cards per game than his 3.6. He is also pretty lenient in terms of fouls per card, at 5.9. Madley has awarded five penalties this season, all of which have come in his past five matches. He’s also shown a red card in two of his past three Premier League games.
