What is an interception in football?
In Opta’s football data framework, an interception is when a player reads and anticipates an opponent’s pass, moves into its path, and deliberately cuts it out to regain possession or redirect play to their team.
The key is intent: the defender must clearly win the ball rather than it striking them incidentally. By contrast, a blocked pass is logged when a player is positioned in the way of a pass and the ball makes contact with them without a clear, anticipatory action to intercept it.
In other words, interceptions are about proactive defensive reading of the game, while blocked passes are more reactive or incidental, reflecting when a pass fails because it hits a defender rather than because the defender deliberately won possession.
What do interception numbers tell us about a player?
Interception numbers often reveal a lot about a player’s defensive awareness and style of play. High interception counts typically point to strong anticipation, positional discipline, and the ability to read passing lanes before the ball is played.
Players who excel in this area tend to be proactive defenders or defensive midfielders, stepping forward to break up attacks early rather than waiting to engage in one-on-one duels. Conversely, lower interception numbers don’t necessarily imply poor defending as they can also reflect a more reactive style, such as centre-backs who hold deeper positions and focus on aerial duels or tackles instead.
In midfield, interception figures are arguably even more telling. Ball-winning midfielders with high numbers often combine pressing intelligence with constant scanning, helping their teams regain possession higher up the pitch.
Who are the best interceptors in Premier League history?
Perhaps surprisingly, two French former Arsenal defenders lead the way in terms of all-time Premier League interceptions with Gael Clichy, who also represented Manchester City, winning a record 855 – 158 more than his nearest competitor, former Gunners team-mate Laurent Koscielny.
Koscielny is tied with Manchester United’s Jonny Evans on 697 ahead of Gareth Barry on 629, who has just one more than his former Everton team-mate Phil Jagielka.
In recent seasons, Antonee Robinson topped the list in 2023-24 with a total of 80 and although he made 18 fewer in 2024-25 with 62 he was again second in the list, beaten only by West Ham full-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
