Manchester City vs Newcastle United: predictions, stats, tips & odds

Manchester City are chasing Arsenal at the top, but with five defeats already, there’s no room for error. Newcastle turn up at the Etihad as mid-table spoilers, but the numbers say they’re shipping too many goals to be trusted on the road. This Premier League clash takes place this Saturday at 8pm at the Etihad Stadium.

Our PredictionOdds & BookmakerConfidenceWhy I’m Backing It
Both Teams to Score: NO11/8 @ BetMGM
(42.1%)
⭐⭐⭐⭐City keep clean sheets in 42% of games and Newcastle have blanked in a third of their away matches. Newcastle’s xG is fine but they’re wasteful (44 big chances missed). The 11/8 is fair — the true chance is closer to 50%.
Cherki to Assist (Anytime)33/20 @ BetMGM
(37.77%)
⭐⭐⭐Seven assists in 22 games (0.32 per game), City average over 2 goals a match, and Newcastle concede 1.42 a game. With Haaland up top, Cherki’s creative numbers make this a value shout above 40% implied.

How both teams go into Man City vs Newcastle

Manchester City’s title hopes have been given a boost in the last few weeks by Arsenal dropping unexpected points in away draws with both Brentford and bottom club Wolverhampton Wanderers. It’s by no means been a vintage City season so far, but the rhetoric around Arsenal will give Pep Guardiola hope that his side’s experience in these situations can pull them through to another title win.

Since an unexpected defeat to Bodo/Glimt in the Champions League last month, City have gone seven games unbeaten in all competitions, with that run including a vital and dramatic away win at Liverpool within it. They now sit just five points behind the table-topping Gunners with a game in hand and with the North London Derby to come on Sunday, this game represents a great opportunity to pile on the pressure.

Newcastle United are enjoying more success in cup competitions than the Premier League this year. The Magpies were only knocked out of the EFL Cup at the semi-final stage, progressed through to the next round of the FA Cup with a win at Aston Villa last weekend and put themselves in a very strong position to reach the Champions League Round of 16 on Wednesday night with a thumping first-leg win over Qarabag.

A 1-2 away win over Tottenham in their last Premier League outing did at least end a three game losing streak for Eddie Howe’s men and lifted them into the top half of the table with 36 points from 26 games played. Mediocrity is not the aim for this ambitious Newcastle outfit but if they can remain in the relative comfort of mid-table while trying to win silverware elsewhere, the St James’ Park faithful will not be too disappointed with the campaign.

Man City team news

Mateo Kovacic and Joskvo Gvardiol are definite absentees for Manchester City. Savinho, Max Alleyne, Jeremy Doku and most importantly Erling Haaland are considered to be doubts at this stage.

Newcastle team news

Emil Krafth, Bruno Guimaraes, Fabian Schar and Valentino Livramento continue to miss out for Newcastle. Yoane Wissa, Sven Botman and Lewis Miley all missed out on the FA Cup win at Villa Park but could be fit enough to return here.

Season Form & Standings

City are second, four points off Arsenal, and averaging 2.04 points per game (53 from 26). Newcastle sit 10th, mid-table with 36 points — that’s 1.38 per game. The gap is 17 points and eight places, which sums up the gulf in consistency. City’s last five: WWLWW. Newcastle’s: LWDWL. The hosts are still in the title race; Newcastle are playing for pride and a possible European spot.

Head-to-Head

City have dominated this fixture with 14 wins from the last 20, Newcastle having never won at the Etihad in that run. The last meeting was a 3-1 City win in the second half of the League Cup semi-final just two weeks ago.

Conclusion

City at home is rarely a betting playground for value, but the stats say Newcastle’s wasteful finishing and leaky defence make them a bad match-up for Pep’s side. I’m not touching the win market at 2/5, but no on BTTS at 11/8 is my main angle as City’s clean sheet rate and Newcastle’s xG underperformance both point that way. For a player prop, Cherki to get an assist at 33/20 is a fair shout. Don’t expect fireworks from the visitors, I can see City controlling this one from start to finish.
