Manchester United vs Everton predicted XIs: Confirmed team news and probable lineups
Manchester United suffered a disappointing derby defeat against rivals Manchester City last weekend and will be hoping to bounce back against Everton, who are battling relegation.
The Toffees are just five points clear of the drop zone and are looking to pick up their first win at Old Trafford since December 2013.
Ten Hag not giving up on Champions League qualification
For those on the outside looking in, Manchester United’s chances of qualifying for next season’s Champions League are looking pretty slim. Following their 3-1 defeat to rivals Manchester City last weekend, the Red Devils are now a massive 11 points behind Aston Villa in fourth place having already played Unai Emery’s men twice, leaving no more opportunities to steal direct points. Even if the Premier League is granted a fifth spot at Europe’s top table — as expected — United still trail Tottenham by six points, with the Lilywhites holding a precious game in hand.
However, Ten Hag himself remains defiant, insisting his team will keep fighting to secure a place among the elite once again.
“It can be a quick turnaround,” Ten Hag said following the loss at the Etihad Stadium. “We have to go into another final and try and get closer to them. It can be an advantage that fifth spot can also be a Champions League spot, so we have to go for it and win our games.”
Tottenham and Aston Villa go head-to-head this weekend, so the bare minimum requirement is that United put a struggling Everton side — winless in 10 Premier League matches — to the sword on Saturday.
Manchester United vs Everton team news
Luke Shaw, Lisandro Martinez, Anthony Martial, Tyrell Malacia, Rasmus Hojlund, Mason Mount and Aaron Wan-Bissaka are all confirmed absentees for Manchester United.
Harry Maguire, Marcus Rashford and Jonny Evans are also doubts for this clash, adding to Erik ten Hag’s injury woes.
Dele Alli and Arnaut Danjuma are set to miss out for Everton, while Idrissa Gueye is a doubt. Andre Gomes is ready to return, though, after coming off the bench for the final 10 minutes against West Ham.
