Belgium route to the World Cup 2026 final: Next match and tactical analysis

Belgium travelled to the 2026 World Cup hoping to forget the failures of Qatar.

The Red Devils were knocked out of the group stage four years ago, a big fall from their semi-final run in 2018. Their group-stage exit proved to be an anomaly, though, as Belgium have now reached the World Cup quarter-finals for the third time in four tournaments.

It hasn’t been a convincing run, though. Belgium did finish top of their group but only took five points from their three games. They drew their first two matches against Egypt and Iran before thrashing New Zealand.

That set up a last-32 tie against Senegal, which Belgium looked set to lose. But they scored two goals in the final five minutes of the game to take their match to extra time, eventually winning with a late penalty. Belgium were a lot more confident in their last-16 victory, beating co-hosts United States 5-1 to end their dreams.

Read on for Belgium’s potential route to the final, next match, and tactical analysis.

Belgium World Cup 2026 route to the final

Belgium’s victory over USA set them up to face Spain in the quarter-finals on 10th July. The winner of that match will face one of France or Morocco in the semi-finals on 14th July.

All routes run to the World Cup Final on Sunday 19th July.

Belgium’s key players for World Cup 2026

Belgium top World Cup Golden Boot contender: Romelu Lukaku

  • Key stat: Romelu Lukaku is Belgium’s all-time top scorer with 93 goals in 131 caps.

Romelu Lukaku has scored more goals at the 2026 World Cup than any other Belgium player. That’s despite the striker only starting one game at the tournament. Lukaku’s three goals have all come in consecutive games, and all when coming off the bench. He got the comeback underway against Senegal in the last-32 and rounded off the resounding win over the USA.

Belgium primary playmaker: Leandro Trossard

  • Key stat: Leandro Trossard has created 17 chances at the World Cup this summer.

Many will have looked to Kevin De Bruyne to be Belgium’s biggest creative outlet at the World Cup. But Leandro Trossard has taken charge. The winger has created 17 chances so far, more than any other Belgium player. In fact, it’s the most of any player at the World Cup this summer. Three of those chances have been big chances, another Belgian-high. And Trossard is one of three Belgium players to provide two assists, with both coming in the knockout stages.

Belgium card magnet & top tackler: Timothy Castagne

  • Key stat: Timothy Castagne is the only Belgium player to reach double-digits for tackles at the World Cup so far.

Timothy Castagne had to battle with Thomas Meunier and Maxim De Cuyper for his spot in Belgium’s starting lineup. He eventually beat the former to be the starting right-back. And he’s been a key part of Belgium’s defence. Castagne has made 12 tackles at the World Cup this summer, more than any other Belgium player. He ranks third for fouls committed, but is one of four Belgian players to have received a yellow card.

At 34 years old, Meunier is still going strong for Belgium. The right-back is still offering out his usual dose of tough defending, with the Lille man the only Red Devil to be booked more than once during qualifying. He also averaged a team-high 2.3 fouls per 90 minutes, and clocked 1.53 tackles per 90.

Belgium rising star: Matias Fernandez-Pardo

With only two senior caps to his name at the time, Matias Fernandez-Pardo was perhaps a surprise inclusion in the Belgium squad. The 21-year-old, though, has become a key player for French Ligue 1 side Lille since joining from Gent in 2024. With bags of potential and a fearless attitude, he has made a few appearances off the bench at the World Cup.

STAND-OUT STAT: Belgium entered the opposition box more times than any other team in Uefa qualifying with 490 touches in the penalty area – and they also topped the rankings for build-up attacks, direct attacks and non-penalty xG.

Belgium’s set-piece specialists

  • Penalties: Youri Tielemans
  • Free kicks: Kevin De Bruyne, Maxim De Cuyper
  • Corners: Kevin De Bruyne, Youri Tielemans, Maxim De Cuyper

Belgium tactical analysis & formation

Belgium team stats (average per game at World Cup 2026):

  • Corners: 4.6
  • Shots on target: 6.4
  • Shots on target conceded: 3.0
  • Offsides: 1.4

Belgium have followed a lot of teams this summer in using a 4-2-3-1 formation. Charles De Ketelaere has been spearheading the attack, chosen ahead of Romelu Lukaku. Premier League stars Leandro Trossard and Jeremy Doku are the preferred starters out wide, though the latter did miss a game to be with his partner as she gave birth.

Youri Tielemans has been a must-start in the double pivot, but his partner has often changed. Timothy Castagne and Maxim De Cuyper have found themselves as the first-choice full-back pairing, with a centre-back duo of Nathan Ngoy and Brandon Mechele.

Belgium manager analysis

Rudi Garcia has been in charge of Belgium since January 2025, when he replaced Domenico Tedesco, who spent an underwhelming two years in the job.

Garcia, who has switched between a 4-2-3-1 and 4-3-3 system, negotiated Belgium through a tricky Uefa Nations League promotion/relegation play-off against Ukraine, before overseeing an unbeaten World Cup qualifying campaign. He has lost just one of his 19 games in charge of Belgium so far.
