Carragher calls out ‘fan boy’ Ferdinand for Ronaldo support

One of the talking points following Man Utd’s 6-3 defeat to Man City on Sunday was the fact that Erik ten Hag did not bring Cristiano Ronaldo off the bench. Ten Hag’s first substitution was a forced one in the first half as Raphael Varane picked up an injury, replaced by Victor Lindelof, while Luke Shaw came on for Tyrell Malacia at half-time.

Just after Anthony had scored Man Utd’s first goal to reduce the arrears to 4-1, Ten Hag made a strange substitution in bringing Anthony Martial on for Marcus Rashford and Casemiro for Scott McTominay. Although Martial did score twice, it was a like-for-like change that didn’t bring much positivity. But the most bizarre substitution came just before Man City scored their sixth as attacker Jadon Sancho was replaced by Fred, leaving Ronaldo on the bench.

After the match, Ten Hag claimed he did not bring Ronaldo on “out of respect” for the Portuguese forward, a decision dubbed disrespectful by Roy Keane. There were others criticising Ten Hag too, but former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believed it was the right decision.

He tweeted: “The idea that ETH got it wrong yesterday by not playing Ronaldo is laughable!

“Ronaldo played at Brentford when it was 4-0 at ht!! It’s not a dig at CR, but Rashford’s pace on the counter attack as we saw v Arsenal/Liverpool was 100% the best option.”

The tweet brought a response from former Man Utd defender Rio Ferdinand, who jokingly mentioned the time Ronaldo didn’t shake Carragher’s hand pre-match at Old Trafford when the Red Devils faced Liverpool.

“Carra you still upset he didn’t shake ur hand at Old Trafford? The hardest thing to do in football is score goals…” Ferdinand tweeted.

But the Twitter “spat” wasn’t done there as Carragher hit back with a dig of his own, calling Ferdinand a Ronaldo fan boy and claiming the ex-Man Utd defender was asked to support his former teammate.

“No I’m delighted it went viral!

“Rio I know how it works, he’s your mate & you/Evra & the rest are on the group WhatsApp & he asks you to come out & defend him, don’t be his fan boy you’re Rio Ferdinand for FFS!!”

Scoreline prediction: Omonia 0-2 Man Utd
