The Red Devils are currently second in Group E, three points clear of third-placed Sheriff and while a win wouldn’t guarantee knockout football it would put them on the path. Omonia, meanwhile, need to win to keep their Europa League hopes alive.
Rio Ferdinand concerned about Jadon Sancho’s form
There have been a few bumps but Man Utd are starting to click under Erik ten Hag, with new signing Antony particularly hitting the ground running having worked with the Dutchman at Ajax. But one player still struggling to make his mark on the team is Jadon Sancho.
The Englishman joined Man Utd at the start of last season to much fanfare having blown the Bundesliga away with his creativity, becoming one of the most sought-after talents in Europe and rightly so. Manchester City and Chelsea had also been linked with him, but Man Utd won the battle and it was hoped that he would hit the ground running.
But his return to England, after leaving Man City’s academy in 2017, has not gone exactly to plan. In his first season at Old Trafford, Sancho scored four goals and recorded three assists in 36 matches across the Premier League and European competitions.
He created on average just 1.69 chances per 90 minutes in those competitions with 0.16 Expected Goals and 0.15 Expected Assists. This season, Sancho has already scored three goals in the Premier League and Europa League but his creativity continues to lack with just 1.25 chances created per 90, and no assist from an xA of 0.74.
And his form has former Man Utd defender Rio Ferdinand worried.
“I haven’t seen [his Bundesliga form] yet. That’s the concerning thing for me,” he said on his Vibe with Five podcast.
“If I’m Jadon Sancho, or in Jadon Sancho’s camp, I am looking at ways in which I can unpick his game, his mind, to unearth the Sancho that made him a coveted talent around Europe.
“His numbers in Germany were great, he was doing marvellous things over there, but it hasn’t transferred over to the Premier League yet.
“And I don’t know why. What is the reason why? Is it because of the way the team set up? Is it because of the pace of the Premier League? Is he getting asked to do more defensively so then he hasn’t got the energy when they’ve got [the ball] in transition?
“His assists and goal record isn’t great when you compare it to other players in his position. So you allow him that time to adapt to this league – he’s had a season of that – and after pre-season, I was thinking, ‘Okay, yeah, this looks like we’ve got the Sancho we’ve bought from Dortmund.'”
“If he gets the goals and gets the assists and affects the game in that area, and if he can get himself between the posts more often then not, when he’s in there he’s shown already he’s a calm finisher. He’s a cool, calm and collected finisher,” he added.
“But I just want to see the Sancho that I was going crazy about and demanding that he come on during the Euros because I haven’t seen that.”
Scoreline prediction: Man Utd 2-0 Omonia Nicosia
