Italy and England meet at the San Siro on Friday night for a proverbial six-pointer in the fight to stay in League A of the Nations League (7.45pm kick-off, UK time).
As things currently stand in Group A3, England are rooted to the foot of the table and winless after four. Italy meanwhile are only faring slightly better in third with just the single win to show for their efforts. Gareth Southgate knows that defeat in the home of Inter and Milan will confirm relegation to League B, but a triumph will move the nation level with Roberto Mancini’s side. It’s all to play for.

Italy team news
Mancini has made a few big calls ahead of this month’s round of international fixtures. Uncapped right-back Pasquale Mazzocchi has received his first call-up at the age of 27 and will be relishing the chance to rub shoulders with some of his nation’s elite names. Gianluca Scamacca has started just one game in the Premier League for West Ham and is yet to score in the top flight, but his place is safe, for now. Wilfried Gnonto’s rise to international prominence convinced Leeds United to capture his signature from FC Zurich and the 18-year-old retains his place in the national fold.
England team news
Despite his strong start to the season, Jadon Sancho has been omitted from this latest squad and is now going to be worried about his place at the World Cup. A thigh injury sustained by Marcus Rashford means he also misses out alongside his Manchester United team-mate, but that has paved the way for Ivan Toney to receive his first call-up, with the in-form Brentford forward looking to impress so close to Qatar. Jordan Pickford also misses out through injury, so Nick Pope and Aaron Ramsdale will be fighting for that starting berth.
