The Blues went out at the quarter-final stage last season, beaten by eventual winners Real Madrid, and will be hoping for another deep run in the competition having won in 2020/21. Dinamo Zagreb, meanwhile, are ending a two-year absence from the Champions League group stage.

Dinamo Zagreb team news

Dinamo Zagreb will be without Emir Dilaver, Luka Menalo and Bosko Sutalo for the visit of Chelsea. Mislav Orsic and Bruno Petkovic will both be looking to cause the Chelsea defence problems, each scoring three goals in the Champions League qualifying rounds.

Chelsea team news

New signings Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Denis Zakaria have travelled with the Chelsea squad and will be available for selection, the former with a protective mask due to his broken jaw. It’s a different kind of mask to the one Aubameyang has previously donned at various points across his career. The seasoned striker has cultivated a reputation for his flamboyant post-goal celebrations which have often been accompanied by a selection of recognisable masks, including Batman, Spider-Man and Black Panther.

When quizzed on whether the former Arsenal man can become a “superhero” for Chelsea, Tuchel refused to indulge in the fantasy, instead laying out exactly what he expects from the deadline-day acquisition. He told the assembled press in Zagreb: “Don’t put any ideas into Auba’s head please, any further ideas. I’m pretty sure he has his own ones. When he scores he can celebrate. First of all, he needs to score.

“He’s very ambitious, very focused. He’s hungry to play for us and prove a point. That’s why he’s here, that’s what we felt from the first moment. He’s happily invited to prove a point.”

In other news, Thiago Silva and N’Golo Kante miss out with the former rested and the latter injured.
