Atletico Madrid team news
Antoine Griezmann – the world’s greatest super sub – is always a doubt to start these days. Or more accurately, always a certainty not to start, instead being brought on with 60 minutes on the clock. Reportedly, Atletico must pay Griezmann’s parent club Barcelona £34million to sign him permanently if he plays over 45 minutes in half of Atletico’s games this season, hence Diego Simeone’s club-enforced substitute shenanigans.
The situation may soon find a resolution, though. Spanish-language outlet Relevo say Barcelona and Atletico are close to agreeing on a reduced figure. Whether this affects the line-up for Sunday’s derby is unclear.
Elsewhere, according to Sport, Atletico are unlikely to be without Thomas Lemar, Sergio Reguilon, Jan Oblak, Stefan Savic and Jose Gimenez.
Of the two teams, Atletico need a result more. They are seventh in the league as things stand, five points off top spot.
Real Madrid team news
Real Madrid have eight wins from eight games this season so far, including the Uefa Super Cup and two Champions League fixtures in addition to the five top-flight encounters so far. Not even the injury to Ballon d’Or-elect Karim Benzema stopped them from picking up three points in last week’s 4-1 win over Real Mallorca and less-routine 2-0 result at home to RB Leipzig in the Champions League on Wednesday. The striker sustained a thigh injury against Celtic and Carlo Ancelotti doesn’t know if he’ll be fit to return on Sunday.
“We’ll see if he can train or not, we won’t take risks,” said the Los Blancos boss. “If he trains well, then he will play.”
Eder Militao is another Real lost in their Champions League opener at Celtic. Uncertainty surrounds his fitness status, too.
