Brazil vs Norway

  • Brazil key stat: The Selecao are bidding to win their ninth successive World Cup last-16 match.
  • Norway key stat: Erling Haaland has scored in each of his last 13 competitive internationals for Norway, scoring 25 goals during this run.

Brazil head into the game unbeaten in seven matches, six of which they’ve won. They’re enjoying a three game winning streak and can draw on a very impressive last-16 record at the World Cup, winning each of their last eight games at this stage since losing to Argentina in 1990.

Vinícius Junior has eight goal involvements across the last two World Cup, including five so far at this edition. With four goals on the board, he’s still just about in the mix for the Golden Boot, which also features his teammate Matheus Cunha, who has three goals to his name.

Only Michael Olise (5) has accumulated more assists than Bruno Guimaraes (4) so far this tournament. The duo, alongside Morocco’s Brahim Diaz (4), are now hunting down Pele’s record of six assists from a single tournament, which he achieved back in 1970.

Norway can make history by reaching the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time in their history. Their form is pretty stunning, having won 13 of their last 14 competitive games, the only exception being a group stage defeat to France when they made widespread changes.

Norway will feel they have an excellent chance of upsetting the five-time champions and can draw on the fact they’ve never lost to Brazil, claiming two wins and two draws from the four meetings, which includes a memorable 2-1 victory at the 1998 World Cup: current manager Stale Solbakken played at the tournament but didn’t feature in that particular game.

The statistics are getting rather silly for Erling Haaland now. His winning goal against the Ivory Coast saw him become the quickest player to score 60 international goals, accomplished in just 53 caps.

Haaland has now scored in each of his last 13 competitive games for Norway, accumulating an eye-popping 25 goals during this stunning run, including five goals in his first three World Cup games (he was rested against France).

He now has his sights on becoming the first European player (and eighth in total) to score in each of their opening four games at the tournament since Italy’s Christian Vieri in 1998 .

Mexico vs England

  • Mexico key stat: Mexico have lost just two of their 89 competitive games at the Azteca Stadium, and are unbeaten there in their last 22 competitive games.
  • England key stat: Harry Kane (13) is one goal away from drawing level with German great Gerd Muller on 14 World Cup goals, which would move him into joint fifth on the tournament’s all-time scoring charts.

Mexico finally won their first knockout stage match since 1986 – when they last hosted the tournament – with a victory over Ecuador, which ended a run of seven knockout defeats.

Confidence is high in the El Tri ranks as the co-hosts bid to reach their first quarter-final in 40 years. For starters, they are the only country to have won all four matches to nil, and could now become the second side behind Italy in 1990 to open up a World Cup with five straight wins without conceding. Meanwhile, England have conceded first in each of their last six knockout stage matches at major tournaments.

Secondly, you may have heard that Mexico boast a superb record at the Azteca Stadium, where they have been defeated just twice in 89 competitive clashes, losing none of the last 22; 16 of which have been wins. On top of that, they’ve won eight and lost none of the 10 World Cup games they’ve played there.

Julian Quinones has been in superb form with three goals and assists, meaning one more goal involvement would see him become the first ever Mexican player to be directly involved in 5+ goals at a single World Cup.

Yet, if there’s one player who could burst the Mexican bubble right now it’s Harry Kane.

You do wonder where England would be without their skipper, who scored a late brace to rescue England in a dramatic comeback win against DR Congo. Kane (13) now has more World Cup goals than Pele (12) and needs one more goal to go level with Germany legend Gerd Muller (14) in joint 5th in the list of all-time World Cup scorers. Meanwhile, another brace would take him level with Ronaldo (15).

Kane has scored three headers so far this tournament – two more than any other player – which has taken his total World Cup tally to four headers, one off Muller (5) and three behind Miroslav Klose’s record of seven (statistics since 1966).

England keeper Jordan Pickford is set to make history by equalling Peter Shilton’s England record of 17 World Cup matches played. Kane will be just behind on 16, as will Marcus Rashford if he plays.

Finally, England have won each of their last four meetings with Mexico, and beat them in the only ever World Cup encounter back in 1966 en route to winning the tournament.
