Spain vs Cape Verde stats

  • Spain snapshot stat: Spain are bidding to extend their unbeaten run to 32 competitive matches (excluding penalty shoot-outs).
  • Cape Verde snapshot stat: Cape Verde could become only the second African country to beat Spain at the World Cup.

European Champions Spain are one of the favourites to lift the World Cup and they will be expected to get off to a winning start against new boys Cape Verde at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, with 65 places separating the countries in the World Rankings.

Spain are enjoying a stunning run of 31 competitive games unbeaten – excluding penalty shoot-outs – which dates back to March 2023. During this run they’ve won Euro 2024 and reached the 2025 Nations League play-off final. They’ll now be bidding to win back-to-back major tournaments for the first time since they famously won three on the spin between 2008 and 2012.

For Cape Verde, simply reaching the tournament represents a historic achievement. The Blue Sharks are making their first World Cup appearance and have been handed one of the most daunting fixtures in world football.

The odds are stacked against the Blue Sharks – 35/1 to win and 14/1 to draw – as they attempt to become only the second ever African side to beat Spain at the tournament after Nigeria in 1998.

Belgium vs Egypt stats

  • Belgium snapshot stat: Belgium are looking to extend their undefeated streak to 14 games.
  • Egypt snapshot stat: Egypt are looking to avoid becoming only the second country to ever fail to win their opening eight World Cup games.

Belgium finished third at the 2018 World Cup, but then slumped to a group stage exit four years ago in Qatar. The Red Devils are looking to build on an impressive qualifying campaign after going unbeaten in eight matches (W5 D3) and scoring 29 goals. Manager Rudi Garcia, whose only defeat in charge came in his first match, has strung together a 13-game unbeaten run heading into this Group G clash.

Egypt, meanwhile, are still searching for their first-ever World Cup victory. The Pharaohs have failed to win any of their seven matches across their previous appearances in 1934, 1990, and 2022, drawing twice and losing five times. Another game without victory would see them become only the second nation after Honduras (nine) to go winless in each of their first eight World Cup matches.

Saudi Arabia vs Uruguay stats

  • Saudi Arabia snapshot stat: If Saudi Arabia lose they will comfortably have the worst loss rate (70%) of any country to play 20+ World Cup matches.
  • Uruguay snapshot stat: Marcelo Bielsa has never seen one of his sides score more than once in a World Cup match, a sequence that could stretch to eight games.

Saudi Arabia head into their seventh World Cup aiming to reach the knockout stages for the first time since their memorable debut in 1994, when they advanced to the last 16. The Green Falcons have won just four of their 19 matches at the tournament, half of which came in 1994, although they did memorably stun eventual winners Argentina in the group stages four years ago.

Another defeat would add to Saudi Arabia’s poor World Cup record. Having lost 13 of their previous 19 matches, a loss to Uruguay would leave them with a 70% defeat rate from 20 games, the highest among any country to play 20+ matches.

Two-time winners Uruguay are preparing for their 15 World Cup and 60th match at the tournament. The two-time world champions suffered a group-stage exit in Qatar but have enjoyed deeper runs in the last 16 years, reaching the quarter-finals in 2018 and finishing fourth in 2010.

Uruguay tend to be slow starters, having won only one of their last eight opening matches. Manager Marcelo Bielsa is currently without a win in four games, with his side scoring just twice during that run. Speaking of goals, or a lack of them, across seven matches as a World Cup manager with Argentina and Chile, none of his sides have scored more than once in a game.

Iran vs New Zealand stats

  • Iran snapshot stat: Iran are on the hunt for their fourth win in a row.
  • New Zealand snapshot stat: Could join Canada, Egypt, and Honduras as the only countries to be winless in their first 7+ World Cup matches.

Iran have lost 11 of their 18 World Cup matches and have failed to progress beyond the group stage across all six of their appearances at the tournament. However, they arrive in decent form having won their last three matches against Costa Rica, Gambia and Mali, and will see an opportunity to add to their modest World Cup tally of three victories when they face New Zealand.

New Zealand return to the World Cup for a third time and first in 16 years when they were the only unbeaten side, with three draws. The All Whites are only one of four countries to have played 6+ World Cup matches and never won. So, if they fail to beat Iran, they will draw level with Canada and Egypt with no wins in seven games, which would leave Honduras as the only country to have played more games (nine) and not won.
