The Premier League returns for gameweek 2, with fixtures taking place over Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday. And while it’s still early days, a strong weekend could start to shape how this campaign unfolds.
Liverpool remain the favourites to retain their title, having injected serious firepower through the transfer window; their trip to Newcastle promises to be a sterner test. Meanwhile, heavyweights like Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea and Man Utd are similarly ready to flex their new strengths as they chase their own ambitions.

West Ham vs Chelsea — Friday 22 August, 8:00pm BST
West Ham have won just two of their nine home Premier League matches under Graham Potter (D3 L4), picking up nine points. The Hammers were beaten 3-0 in a worrying performance at newly promoted Sunderland last weekend, but they can take something here against a Chelsea side that may be suffering from the lack of a pre-season. Enzo Maresca’s men could only muster a goalless draw last Sunday with Crystal Palace and the points could well be shared in another London derby on Friday.
Prediction: West Ham 2-2 Chelsea (14/1 with Lottoland)
Manchester City vs Tottenham — Saturday 23 August, 12:30pm
Manchester City looked frighteningly good against Wolves last weekend with a convincing 4-0 win at Molineux. City have changed their approach and put in a considerably larger amount of crosses than in their games at the back end of last season. Erling Haaland looked sharp, and with Tijani Reijnders pulling the strings, it could spell trouble for Spurs. The Lilywhites overcame Burnley 3-0 on gameweek 1, but have only faced an undercooked PSG team who used the Super Cup as a pre-season friendly, and potentially the worst team in the division in Scott Parker’s Clarets.
Prediction: Manchester City 3-1 Tottenham (10/1 with Lottoland)
Bournemouth vs Wolves — Saturday 23 August, 3:00pm
Bournemouth showed grit in defeat to Liverpool, while Wolves leaked goals against Man City. The Cherries may have lost some of their defenders over the summer, but their attacking line-up of Evanilson, Semenyo and Kluivert can cause any back-line issues. The Old Gold look short of ideas in the final third after the departure of Matheus Cunha and may struggle on the south coast on Saturday.
Prediction: Bournemouth 3-0 Wolves (14/1 with Lottoland)
Brentford vs Aston Villa — Saturday 23 August, 3:00pm
It has been a far from ideal start to the season for Brentford, who now look set to lose Yoane Wissa after the departures of Christian Norgaard and Bryan Mbeumo. The Bees were beaten 3-1 on the road by Nottingham Forest last weekend, and now face a Villa side who will be eager to get off the mark after a goalless draw with Newcastle. Unai Emery may have the inexperienced Keith Andrews’ number in what could be a convincing away win for the Villans.
Prediction: Brentford 0-2 Aston Villa (10/1 with Lottoland)
Burnley vs Sunderland — Saturday 23 August, 3:00pm
Burnley’s success last year was built on their defensive record as they shipped just 16 goals in 46 Championship matches. Parker’s will be desperate not to get beat here against a fellow newly promoted side, and it’s worth noting that the last three meetings between these two teams have produced just one goal. The last two at Turf Moor have both ended 0-0, and this one could feel like a bit of a six-pointer, even at this ridiculously early stage of the campaign.

Arsenal vs Leeds United — Saturday 23 August, 5:30pm
Leeds put in a good performance on their return to the Premier League against Everton and deserved to win the game, despite a fortuitous penalty decision. However, going to Arsenal is a different kettle of fish, and the Gunners have the ability to remind Daniel Farke’s side of just how difficult the Premier League can be. Arsenal managed a 1-0 win over Manchester United last weekend and make it two from two against Leeds.

Crystal Palace vs Nottingham Forest — Sunday 24 August, 2:00pm
Nottingham Forest are unbeaten in their last eight away league games against Crystal Palace (W3 D5), since a 1-0 loss in the second tier in December 2003. Each of their last four visits to Selhurst Park has finished level and another stalemate looks likely on Sunday after both teams put in respectable performances last weekend.
Prediction: Crystal Palace 1-1 Nottingham Forest (5/1 with Lottoland)
Everton vs Brighton — Sunday 24 August, 2:00pm
This will be the first ever competitive game at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium and the result looks rather tricky to predict after The Toffees’ mediocre showing at Elland Road on Monday. Brighton played out a 1-1 draw with Fulham on Matchday 1, and they can get on the scoresheet here, having gone unbeaten in their last four visits (W3 D1) to Everton.
Prediction: Everton 2-2 Brighton & Hove Albion (14/1 with Lottoland)
Fulham vs Manchester United — Sunday 24 August, 4:30pm
Manchester United may have been beaten 1-0 by Arsenal last weekend, but they have been given plenty of praise after a performance that deserved at least a point. Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha looked dangerous and Benjamin Sesko will have benefited from his cameo off the bench and should start on Sunday. Fulham have failed to enhance their squad this summer and may be sleepwalking towards the lower end of the table this season.
Prediction: Fulham 1-3 Manchester United (16/1 with Lottoland)
Newcastle vs Liverpool — Monday 25 August, 8:00pm
It will be an incredibly raucous atmosphere at St James’ Park on Monday evening with plenty of sub-plots, none bigger than the Alexander Isak saga. The Magpies impressed without their talisman, shutting out Villa last weekend on the road, but they are 17 Premier League matches without a win against Liverpool (D5 L12) since winning 2-0 back in December 2015 under Steve McClaren. The Reds look stacked in the attacking department after the arrivals of Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz and can edge out a thoroughly entertaining contest to round off the Bank Holiday weekend.
