Coventry City‘s rough start to life back in the Premier League continued with a 5-0 defeat at home to Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday afternoon.
The Seagulls were only 1-0 up at half-time with Charalampos Kostoulas giving them the advantage through an excellent piece of individual skill. It was the Greek teenager’s first league goal of the season.
Malick Yalcouye doubled Brighton’s lead six minutes after the break, before Coventry’s wheels fell off. Taiwo Awoniyi was sent off for an off-the-ball elbow by Maxim De Cuyper, with VAR upholding the decision. Bobby Thomas then conceded a penalty for bringing down Diego Gomez, with Pascal Gross converting.
In the moment of the match, Lewis Dunk scored a Goal of the Season contender from 30 yards, catching everyone off guard. Yasin Ayari completed the demolition with an equally impressive finish deep into injury time.
Coventry vs Brighton analysis
Maxim De Cuyper continues creative brilliance
A left-back by trade, Maxim De Cuyper has started this season as Brighton’s left winger. And it’s safe to say the Belgian has been enjoying himself.
De Cuyper went into Sunday afternoon with two goals and two assists to his name in five appearances across all competitions. That included a strike in Brighton’s 4-0 win over Aston Villa and an assist in the 1-1 draw against Leeds United.
Even as a left-back, the 25-year-old was a valuable source of creativity for Brighton last season. He finished third among his teammates for chances created in the Premier League (32), amounting to three assists. This season, he’s stepped things up another level in his more advanced role.
De Cuyper created no fewer than four chances against Coventry on Sunday, including one big chance. And it was he who set Yalcouye loose for Brighton’s crucial second goal to take the game away from the hosts. He also played five passes into the final third and made four line-breaking passes. For good measure, the former Club Brugge man additionally covered a match-high 10.9km, providing endless energy to the Brighton left.

That’s De Cuyper’s fifth direct goal involvement of the season across all competitions. He’s now created nine chances in the Premier League, the fifth-most of any player. And he’s one of just 15 players to log more than a single assist. He joins teammate Gross in that club, with the German first overall for chances created (13).
Coventry’s blunt edge continues to cost them
It’s hard to believe that Coventry were the highest scorers in the Championship last season. They scored 97 goals in 46 second-tier matches, at least 15 more than any other side.
The Sky Blues have now failed to score in any of their four Premier League games at the start of this campaign. And Sunday afternoon showcased some of their worst habits right now.
Frank Lampard’s men were not without chances. Indeed, they managed 14 shots to the tune of 1.39 Expected Goals and had 29 touches in the opposition box compared to Brighton’s 26.
However, when the opportunities came, and they did manage periods of domination in the match, Coventry players were left panicking.
Ephron Mason-Clark was particularly guilty, passing up three considerable opportunities worth a collective 0.50 xG. He was applying scuffed finishes that screamed of a player lacking in confidence at this level.
But he was not the only culprit. Jack Rudoni missed the biggest Coventry opportunity from close range in the 27th minute, while Bobby Thomas and Brandon Thomas-Asante also fluffed decent openings.
Credit must be given to Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, who made six vital saves worth 1.96 goals prevented in an inspired performance. However, there was more than enough here from Coventry that a competent Premier League outfit could have taken advantage of.
Worries at the back
All of this wouldn’t be so bad if Coventry were keeping things airtight at the other end, but they’re not. Brighton’s goals on Sunday came far too easily, with Hurzeler’s side cutting open their hosts with ease or taking advantage of an opponent too happy to sit off and show respect.
Coventry put in a brave effort in their 1-0 defeat away at Manchester City last weekend, but there was none of that grit on show here. The Midlands side have now conceded 10 without reply, with only Crystal Palace (11) leaking more — though the Eagles have scored six goals of their own.
Only Coventry are without a point now, while they’re one of just two sides without a goal and have the second-worst defensive record in the division. That’s a formula that will only deliver Premier League relegation for Coventry unless Lampard can find some inspiration fast.
