Chelsea welcome Arsenal to Stamford Bridge in a monster London derby. Six points separate the pair at the top of the table. Victory for the Blues would really open up the title race. A win for the Gunners would give them a nigh-on insurmountable lead at the summit.

Crucially, the quality hasn’t dropped, and it means the Gunners are the favourites to lift a first Premier League title in over 20 years. If they pass this test with flying colours, then the title is theirs to lose.
The Gunners faced a huge week in their season following the international break. They breezed past Tottenham and proved against Bayern that they are currently the best team in Europe. Beat Chelsea, and a banana-skin seven-day period will have been navigated with ease.

And while the likes of Bukayo Saka, William Saliba and makeshift frontman Mikel Merino will be key, it’s a former Chelsea star that is proving Arsenal’s driving force. Declan Rice has adopted to the left sided box-to-box number eight role with ease. There are few, if any, better in the Premier League, if not the world, than Rice in his current role.
It’s a far cry from his role with West Ham, where Rice was utilised more as a defensive midfielder with the aim of instigating counter attacks for the Hammers. For Arsenal, he dominates the left side, so often dictating the tempo in a key area. As such, there is the promise for a huge key battle in the middle of the park on Sunday.
Caicedo vs Rice battle key
Rice is expected to face off against Moises Caicedo in a crunch clash for midfield dominance. Caicedo endured a tough start to life at Stamford Bridge. Now he’s re-established himself as one of the best ball winners in the league. After all, the Ecuador international ranks top for interceptions (26), fourth for possession won in the midfield third (37) and sixth for tackles (34) in England’s top tier this term.
Caicedo is also winning 5.4 ground duels per 90, double that of Rice (2.7) to reinforce that the former is the superior player off the ball. What’s more, Caicedo knows exactly what to do with the ball when he regains possession for his side. Indeed, the Blues man is averaging a pass accuracy of 90.68% from 60.3 passes per 90. The former is marginally higher than Rice (90.11%) but the latter lower than the Arsenal man (64.7).
The crucial stand out between the pair, though, is how Rice has altered his game from ball winner with West Ham to key creator for the Gunners. The England star is creating an average of 1.9 chances per 90. That return is inflated in that Rice is on set-piece duties, yet he’s on hand to carve out the chances for teammates.
Caicedo’s ball-winning approach may benefit Arsenal
In all likelihood, it’s this battle between Caicedo and Rice where Sunday’s London derby will be won and lost. Not only for the respective roles for Chelsea and Arsenal but the way with which they carry out their duties. Caicedo may be an elite ball winner, but the 24-year-old is still committing 1.4 fouls per 90. In addition, he’s committing 1.2 fouls from tackle attempts per 90.
The style of play will naturally land Caicedo in hot water with officials. Against set-piece specialists Arsenal, it could prove disastrous. The Gunners ranks top for set piece goals (10) in the Premier League this season. Four of the 11 goals Chelsea have conceded this season (36.4%) have come from set-piece situations in the 2025-26 campaign.
And with Rice impressing on corners and free kicks – he ranks second for chances created from set pieces (11) in the Premier League this season – Caicedo does need to be cautious in his possession-winning approach.
There will be a number of mini-battles on show at Stamford Bridge on Sunday evening to determine the victor in this crunch clash. It’s the one between Caicedo and Rice that could ultimately determine whether the three points remain in west London, or the Gunners return north with a huge win under their belt.
