Mo Salah analysis: Egyptian King’s Liverpool career in numbers

Mo Salah has played his last game for Liverpool after nine years at the club.

The Egyptian King’s story at Anfield is now officially over. After nine years, his footballing trajectory will continue elsewhere, both the player and the club have confirmed.

His next destination is still unsure. But English football will lose one of its most legendary players ever.

Salah joined from Roma in the summer of 2017 and there were doubts about his adaptation to the Premier League.

His previous experience with Chelsea also didn’t help. Which is ironic actually, considering he introduced himself to the world precisely with performances against Tottenham and the Blues themselves, back in 2013, for Basel.

His strong stint in Italy gave a few indications that he was a top-level footballer. But what he did for Liverpool was beyond even the most optimistic Reds fan’s imagination.

Liverpool records

The first season, in fact, was arguably his best. With not too much expectation and a little doubt, he made sure right away fans and rivals understood the level he was capable of reaching.

Salah immediately set a Liverpool record for most goals scored in a Premier League modern era season (32), surpassing Luis Suarez’s 31 in 2013-14.

His performances also led the Reds back to the Champions League after an 11-year hiatus. And who knows what could have happen had Sergio Ramos not injured his shoulder just 30 minutes in.

Luckily for him, he got another chance at the European trophy. Just one year later, they got back to the final after one of the most incredible comebacks in recent memory, against Barcelona, and defeated Tottenham in the final.

He scored at least 18 more Champions League goals than any other player in Liverpool history. The closest to Salah’s 48 is Steven Gerrard’s 30.

The Egyptian King managed to record a ‘double-double’ in all but one of his full seasons for Liverpool so far. The exception was 2020-21 – but he more than made up for it finding the net 31 times.

The recently ended campaign was far and away been the worst of the lot. And yet, he guaranteed double digits in goals and assists once again by setting up Curtis Jones against Brentford on final day.

And this assist (his 93rd) made him surpass Gerrard himself (92) for the most in the Premier League by a Liverpool player.

Last year, on the other hand, was the exact opposite. It was only the second 20+ goals, 15+ assists season by a player in Premier League history, after Thierry Henry for Arsenal in 2002-03.

He was far and away the best player in the country and backpacked the Reds into their 20th league title. Salah was also their top goalscorer in the 2019-20 winning campaign. Though at the time he had more help, from the likes of Sadio Mane, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson.

Salah has ended his Liverpool career with nine titles and as their third leading scorer of all time. A 2x Premier League, 2x Carabao Cup, 1x Champions League, 1x FA Cup, 1x Uefa Super Cup, 1x Community Shield and 1x Intercontinental Cup winner.

Premier League records

Mo Salah not only made his mark at Liverpool, but also placed himself among the Premier League greats.

His ability to consistently find ways to contribute never ceased to amaze Reds or rival fans. It’s hard to imagine him playing for another English side, so the all-time rankings should remain the same.

He is third in goal involvements (287), fourth in goals scored (193) and seventh in assists (94).

But when we narrow the span down to his time in Liverpool, it’s not even fair. The Egyptian King leads all players in all three of the aforementioned categories since returning to the Premier League.

Had the Reds not had such a worthy opponent as Manchester City in the many years they both ruled the top flight, Salah would have had more titles to his name.

Honours and achievements

However, while Salah may not have won as many collective trophies as he should have, considering the success both he and Liverpool enjoyed and how dominant they were, there is a long list of individual honours.

The Reds’ No.11 was named Premier League Player of the Season twice: 2017-18, his first for the club, and 2024-25, his second-to-last.

He also won the PL Golden Boot four times – including two in a row. In 2017-18 and 2018-19, as well as 2021-22 and 2024-25.

Salah also holds the record for most Premier League Player of the Month awards, with seven (alongside Sergio Aguero and Harry Kane).

Also in his first season with Liverpool, the Egyptian King won the Puskas Award. 2017-18’s most beautiful goal was his brilliant solo effort and well-placed finish in the Merseyside Derby against Everton.

To this day, Salah remains the only opposing player to ever score a hat-trick at Old Trafford.

In fact, Manchester United are the team against which he has scored the most goals against in his Liverpool stint (22). Their stadium is also his ‘preferred’ opposing venue, with 10 goals. Theatre of Dreams indeed.

This was clearly an off year for Mo Salah. An exit already seemed increasingly more likely, considering his relationship with Arne Slot, being benched and other factors – who knows what else could have affected him.

But it’s different when both parties confirm that they have reached the end. And even more when the goodbye is official. Salah couldn’t deliver the win in his final game, but did collect one last man of the match award.
