Atletico Madrid vs Barcelona: Prepare for a fiery clash at the top of La Liga

Atletico Madrid host Barcelona at the Wanda Metropolitano on Sunday with top spot in La Liga on the line.

For Barcelona, it’s an opportunity to extend their two-point advantage over Atletico and take another step toward a third consecutive league title. For Atletico, it’s a chance to leapfrog the reigning champions, head into the November international break atop the table, and exact revenge for a transfer saga that dominated the summer headlines.

The bad blood between these two sides intensified over Barcelona’s pursuit of Julian Alvarez. Atletico accused the Catalans of improperly approaching their star striker and encouraging him to force a move. Barcelona were handed a €602 fine by the Spanish Football Federation at the end of October, bringing an acrimonious chapter of the rivalry back into the spotlight.

Alvarez didn’t come out of the saga looking too bright either. He was repeatedly booed by Atletico fans upon his return to the team. However, the Argentine has gradually started winning them over. After setting up Alex Baena’s last-gasp winner at Espanyol, Alvarez ended his six-month goalscoring drought by rescuing a 1–1 draw at Stuttgart before receiving a standing ovation at the Metropolitano following his winner against Deportivo La Coruna. He has since gone two matches without scoring, with Atletico beating Levante 2–0 before suffering a 2–0 defeat to Bayern Munich.

Barcelona’s Alvarez alternative

Rather than splash the cash on another marquee centre-forward, Barcelona opted to reinvent Raphinha as their attacking spearhead, supplementing him with the arrival of backup Gabriel Jesus. It’s a gamble that has paid off handsomely.

After an injury-plagued 2025/26 campaign, Raphinha has returned to his scintillating best, leading La Liga in goals (15) and goal contributions (18). The Brazilian also ranks among the top three players for Expected Goals, scoring frequency, shots per game, and shots on target per game.

Raphinha has spearheaded a historic attacking start for Barcelona. The Blaugrana have scored 46 goals so far, second only to Athletic Bilbao’s 49 in 1930/31 for the most scored in the opening 11 matches of a La Liga campaign. Although their unbeaten start across all competitions came to an end with defeats to Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid, Barcelona have responded emphatically. They’ve thrashed Deportivo Alaves 6-1 and beat Aston Villa 3-0 in the Champions League.

A reason for Atleti optimism

Nevertheless, Atletico have every reason to fancy their chances. Diego Simeone‘s side eliminated Barcelona from both the Champions League and Copa del Rey last season, even if the Blaugrana ultimately secured a domestic double while Atletico finished trophyless for a fifth consecutive season.

League meetings have been a different story. Barcelona have won their last three games against Atletico and have won six of their past seven visits to the Metropolitano.

However, plenty has changed since their last meeting in April. Not least the departures of starting strikers Antoine Griezmann and Ferran Torres. Griezmann was particularly influential in Atletico’s Champions League triumph over Barcelona, dropping between the lines to offer an outlet, link midfield with attack and help his teammates escape pressure.

But Atletico have shown few signs of missing their all-time leading scorer. The Rojiblancos have won seven consecutive league matches and haven’t conceded in La Liga since 10th October. They boast the division’s best defensive record, having conceded just eight goals, while ranking third for goals scored, shots per game and shots on target per game.

Simeone’s side are also evolving into a more possession-oriented outfit. They rank third in La Liga for possession and second for accurate passes per game, demonstrating their growing ability to dictate proceedings rather than simply absorb pressure and strike on the counterattack.

However, Atletico’s results have been considerably better than their underlying performances suggest. They have scored 4.58 more goals than expected and conceded 3.93 fewer, helping them climb to second despite an expected-points tally that would leave them fifth. Their clinical finishing and defensive efficiency have been instrumental in their winning streak, but Sunday’s encounter will determine whether they can sustain those margins against the league’s most prolific attack.

Missing stars

Both Hansi Flick and Simeone will also have to contend with significant absences. With Eric Garcia, Jules Kounde and Xavi Espart sidelined, Brian Farinas is expected to deputise at right-back for Barcelona, while Marc Bernal looks set to replace the injured Rodri in midfield.

Atletico, meanwhile, will be without their marquee defensive signing, Cristian Romero. The Argentine’s importance is reflected in the numbers. Atletico concede just 0.57 goals and 8.2 shots per match when he starts, compared to 1.25 goals and 13.5 shots without him. That’s a 65% increase in shots conceded, underlining how much more vulnerable Simeone’s defense becomes in his absence.

Robin Le Normand, David Hancko and Marc Pubill have struggled to replicate Romero’s defensive authority. And Barcelona will be looking to exploit that vulnerability by progressing through midfield and creating opportunities for Raphinha and Lamine Yamal. Atletico’s ability to prevent the visitors from finding their attacking stars in promising positions could ultimately determine the outcome.

Barcelona are bidding to become the first team since Pep Guardiola‘s side in 2010/11 to win three consecutive La Liga titles. And a victory in Madrid would strengthen their grip on first place heading into the international break.

Atletico, meanwhile, are seeking to return to the summit for the first time since December 2024, when they climbed above Barcelona following a dramatic 2–1 victory. They also have an opportunity to achieve another extraordinary milestone for Simeone, who could surpass Luis Aragones with a record-breaking 345th victory in La Liga.
