The summer months may have provided plenty of action, drama and emotion, with England Women winning Euro 2022 and elite club friendlies keeping everyone entertained, but the return of top-flight football has given football fans across the continent an adrenaline shot of excitement.

The Premier League’s opening gun over the weekend really set the tone for the campaign, with a string of ‘Big Six’ clubs dropping points and failing to deliver, including Liverpool, who drew with newly-promoted Fulham, and Man Utd, who lost 2-1 to Brighton in Erik ten Hag’s first match in charge.

This weekend should offer a similar level of theatre with some really interesting match-ups, including Sunday’s blockbuster bout between London rivals Chelsea and Tottenham, while across the M25 Arsenal host Leicester City, and West Ham and Nottingham Forest compete in the ‘Jesse Lingard derby’.

The short space of time between games in the Premier League makes it perfect for accumulators. For those unfamiliar, accumulators allow you to pool more than one bet together for increased odds. To win, all selections must come through.

Some markets cannot be combined. Bet UK alert you on your betslip if this is the case (example below).

How does Bet UK’s Acca Club work?

If you followed the steps to claim your bonus card on the My Promotions page, BetUK will give you five profit boosts each week, refreshing every Monday (they reset on Sunday at 23:59 and you cannot roll any over).

You can claim five profit boosts in a week, up to a maximum of a 50% profit boost. The boosts will also increase depending on how many selections you have in your acca. For example, a three-selection acca enables you to receive a 10% boost while four selections unlocks 20%. The boosts increase by 10% accordingly, going all the way up to 50%.

Any other football to bet on this weekend?

Of course, it’s not just the Premier League that resumes this weekend. The Championship got underway a fortnight ago, with Vincent Kompany making his English bow in the dugout, overseeing a 1-0 win for Burnley against Huddersfield. This weekend marks matchday three in the English second tier, with Blackburn Rovers leading the fledgling table after two games.

The Bundesliga got underway at the weekend as Europa League winners Eintracht Frankfurt capitulated 5-1 to reigning German champions Bayern Munich, while Ligue 1 saw PSG resume order with a 5-0 win over Clermont Foot. Christophe Galtier marks his debut match at the Parc des Princes against Montpellier this weekend, while Bayern host Wolfsburg.

Elsewhere, La Liga starts up this weekend, with Real Madrid taking on Almeria, Barcelona hosting Rayo Vallecano and Atletico Madrid making the short journey to Getafe. Serie A also begins with Milan welcoming Udinese to the San Siro, Inter travelling to Lecce and Juventus colliding with Sassuolo in Turin.

“Manchester United should play Martinez in midfield”

Erik ten Hag got off to the worst possible start as the new Manchester United manager over the weekend, losing 2-1 to Brighton on home soil. The Dutchman has been left to pick over the bones of that opening-day defeat and will need to re-evaluate his squad ahead of this weekend’s journey to Brentford.

One of the talking points against Brighton was the question of Man Utd’s midfield, consisting of a recognised double-pivot of Fred and Scott McTominay. The duo appeared overwhelmed at times as Brighton swamped the middle of the park, and Roy Keane, in particular, was less than impressed by what he saw.

“The [lack of] decision-making and football intelligence from midfield, particularly Fred,” Keane concerningly reflected in the aftermath.

“I’ve been going on about it for a long time – Fred and [Scott] McTominay are not good enough.”

Links to Frenkie de Jong and the recent emergence of Adrien Rabiot as a target would suggest Ten Hag recognises a problem position in his squad and is eager to rectify it, but Man Utd legend Rio Ferdinand believes summer recruit Lisandro Martinez — a centre-back by trade — could actually do the job further up the pitch.

“I wouldn’t pick McTominay or Fred,” said Ferdinand on his Vibe with Five Youtube channel

“In my midfield, I’m going to play Martinez as the holding midfielder and take Fred out.

“I’m going to play Varane and Maguire [at centre-back].”

Chelsea to finish above Liverpool, says Ben Foster

Despite Liverpool strengthening this summer with the £64.3m signing of Nunez and concluding last season with a photo finish in the Premier League title race, former Manchester United and England goalkeeper Ben Foster doesn’t believe they’ll be in the top two this campaign.

Instead the veteran shot-stopper has backed newly-owned Chelsea to pip them to the post, despite the west Londoners losing several big players this summer, not least Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen and Lukaku, while bringing in just two new recruits in Sterling and Koulibaly.

Speaking on his The Cycling GK YouTube channel, Foster listed Man City and Chelsea as his top two for next season, explaining: “I think there will be two teams better than them [Liverpool]. I can’t see them being up there, challenging for the title, I just can’t.”

On who he thinks will win the 2022/23 Premier League season, Foster added: “There’s no looking past Manchester City this year.

“The big signing – Erling Haaland – I just think he could pulverise the Premier League, I really do.

“He could score a bucket load of goals. He will have a banging season and take the league by storm.”
