Who could Netherlands meet in the knockout rounds?

If the Netherlands were to win Group A, they would face the runners-up of Group B, which consists of England, USA, Iran and Wales, in Al Rayyan on 3rd December. England are favourites to win Group B with Wales tipped to finish second. If Van Gaal’s men get through that, it’s still a tough run to the World Cup final with the likes of Argentina, France, Spain, Germany, Belgium, Brazil, Portugal and Uruguay all potentially to come.

If they win Group A Potential Opponent
Round of 16 Wales
Quarter-Final Argentina
Semi-Final Brazil
Final France

Things will be tougher, if Netherlands finish second. England would be the likely round of 16 opponent instead of Wales before the likes of Argentina, France, Spain, Germany, Belgium, Brazil, Portugal and Uruguay come into the picture.

Netherlands players most at risk of missing the World Cup 2022 and those knocking on the door

A lack of playing time at club level could prove costly for some players. Ryan Gravenberch has yet to cement a berth at Bayern Munich meaning the promising youngster could see his World Cup dreams evapote. The same goes for Gravenberch’s former Ajax teammate Donny van de Beek who is effectively reduced to making cameos at Manchester United. Elsewhere capless Jeremie Frimpong might have to wait his turn. The young Bayer Leverkusen right-back is expected to watch the finals at home, a fate seemingly preserved for Roma full-back Rick Karsdorp and Borussia Dortmund forward Donyell Malen.

Netherlands players to watch at this year’s World Cup 2022

Netherlands top World Cup Golden Boot contender – Memphis Depay

There’s only really one man that’s going to be leading the line for Oranje this winter, and it’s Memphis Depay – who is currently 25/1 favourite to win the Golden Boot.

The Barcelona forward ended Uefa’s qualification phase as the joint top-scorer with 12 goals, level with Harry Kane and finishing three ahead of Poland’s lethal marksman Robert Lewandowski. Since the start of 2021 he’s bagged 21 goals across 21 matches for Oranje including netting twice at Euro 2020 — both of which came in the group phase. At the time of writing he’s joint-second on the Netherlands all-time goalscorer list on 42 goals, level with Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and eight behind Robin van Persie.

Netherlands player to watch – Frenkie de Jong

The name on everyone’s lip this past summer, Frenkie de Jong ultimately remained at his dream club Barcelona despite heavy interest from the Premier League, where he could have linked up with former Ajax coach Erik ten Hag at Manchester United.

Ten Hag’s desire for a reunion was sound as De Jong is among the elite press-resistant midfielders playing today. Much like at Euro 2020 the Netherlands fate rests in De Jong’s hands. He is the kernel around which the rest of Van Gaal’s side’s panache is constructed.

Netherlands emerging player to look out for – Kenneth Taylor

An option to start alongside De Jong in Oranje’s midfield is rising star Kenneth Taylor who has successfully broken into Ajax’s first team subsequently following in the footsteps of Van de Beek and Gravenberch if not usurping them. The likelihood is Taylor would operate as nothing more than a squad player but he’s already shown that he’s good enough to be part of the Netherlands senior team and Van Gaal — like he did in 2014 — isnt shy when it comes to giving emerging youngsters an opportunity on the grandest stage.

Netherlands tactical analysis & likely formation at the World Cup

Van Gaal’s return as head coach has seen the Netherlands revert to a classical 4-3-3 shape with one controlling midfielder anchoring two attack-minded number 8s. However, in recent outings, they’ve switched to a back-three — which the former Man Utd head coach famously deployed in Oranje’s unexpected semi-final run eight years ago — and chances are that will be how Oranje will line up in Qatar.

This will undoubtedly mean a 3-5-2 shape with Steven Bergwijn and Memphis Depay as the forwards. Two wing-backs will support Oranje’s three-man midfield with Virgil van Dijk spearheading a defence that should also consist of Matthijs de Ligt and Nathan Aké.
