Barrott has overseen five Premier League games so far this season, and he’s the strictest referee in the division. He has shown 26 yellow cards and one red across his five matches, with his 5.4 cards per game the most of any Premier League referee this season.
Barrott is also one of seven referees to have awarded at least two penalties, and he’s done it in the fewest amount of games. Barrott has already taken charge of a Man Utd game this season, overseeing their 3-2 win over Burnley at the end of August.
The Red Devils are now unbeaten in four league games, winning three, jumping up to eighth in the league. They’re level on points with hosts Tottenham, who lost last weekend.

As one of the Premier League’s newer referees, Barrott has only taken charge of three Tottenham matches during his career. The first actually came in the FA Cup third round in January 2024, a 1-0 win for Tottenham over Burnley. He then took charge of their league win over Brighton and Hove Albion shortly after. Barrott oversaw just one Tottenham game last season, their 6-3 home defeat to Liverpool.

Barrott has also taken charge of just three Man Utd games during his career, including the one against Burnley earlier this season. All three matches came in the league, with two last season. They saw Man Utd beat Brentford at home and lose to Arsenal at the Emirates.

What happened when Samuel Barrott last refereed Man Utd?
As mentioned, Barrott was referee for Man Utd’s 3-2 win over Burnley earlier this season. And it was very eventful. Barrott awarded two penalties to Man Utd, with different results. The first was given for a foul on Mason Mount by Kyle Walker. But it was checked by VAR and eventually overturned. The second was for a foul on Amad Diallo by Jaidon Anthony. Barrott didn’t award that penalty, only to be recommended to review by VAR. Barrott also showed Burnley six yellow cards, four of which came late on as he lost control a little bit.
