West Ham United and Newcastle United face off in the Premier League on Sunday at 2pm, with Robert Jones appointed as the referee.
This will be Jones’ sixth Premier League game of the season, and he’s one of the least card-happy officials of the competition. Jones has shown just 12 yellow cards in his five games so far, with no reds — for an average of 2.4 per match.
But he was involved in a bit of controversy in Chelsea’s win over Fulham. Jones gave in to VAR for a soft overturn of a goal for the Cottagers due to a perceived foul in the buildup.
He has also reffed both of these sides already this season. Jones was the man in the middle for West Ham’s defeat to Sunderland on the opening weekend, before overseeing Newcastle’s goalless draw with Bournemouth in Gameweek 5.
Jones has also refereed this game before overseeing a 4-3 win for Newcastle in March 2024.
West Ham come into this game in rotten form, still struggling since the arrival of Nuno Espirito Santo. Newcastle are also in the bottom half of the early table, but they did win last weekend.

Robert Jones’ West Ham record
This will be Jones’ 10th West Ham game as a referee, and the eighth in the Premier League. His first West Ham game came in the Carabao Cup, the Hammers’ embarrassing 4-0 defeat to Oxford United in 2019. West Ham haven’t really enjoyed seeing Jones of late, winning just one of their ast five games with him in the middle.

What happened when Robert Jones refereed West Ham in this fixture?
As mentioned, Jones was the man in the middle for West Ham’s 4-3 away defeat to Newcastle in the 2023-24 season. He showed just one yellow card to Tomas Soucek for a foul — though did also book David Moyes late on. Importantly, though, Jones awarded two penalties against West Ham which were both scored.

Robert Jones’ Newcastle record
Jones has been in charge of a fair few Newcastle games, with this set to be his 17th. He’ll have only reffed four teams more during his career. His first Newcastle game came in the fourth round of the FA Cup in 2020, a goalless draw with Oxford United. Newcastle actually went winless in their first three games with Jones officiating. But they’ve won nine of the 13 since. They did draw the most recent one, though, against Bournemouth earlier this season.

What happened when Robert Jones refereed Newcastle in this fixture?
On the other side of the 4-3 game from 2023-24 were Newcastle. And despite being awarded two penalties, the Magpies may have felt hard done by. The penalties were both won by Anthony Gordon and converted by Alexander Isak, helping towards the win. But Gordon was also sent off for two yellow cards in the space of 10 minutes. The first was for a foul on Mohammed Kudus, the second for kicking the ball away after a late foul. And it looked so though Jones forget that he had initially booked Gordon, taking a moment to show the eventual red. Harvey Barnes and Alexander Isak were also booked, as was Eddie Howe.
What should we expect from Robert Jones?
Gillett is one of seven referees to have awarded more tha none penalty in the Premier League this season. He has also given three to Chelsea, including two in one game against Manchester United in 2023-24. On the other side of this game, Gillett is yet to award Tottenham a penalty, but he has given two against them. Again they both came in the same match.
