What is a shot?
Opta defines a shot on target as “a deliberate attempt to score that is on target. Includes all Goals being scored and shots on target saved by the Goalkeeper. It also includes shots on target that are Blocked by a last line defending player, preventing the ball from entering the Goal.”
Similarly for off target, it states: “A deliberate attempt to score that misses the target, without contact from a player diverting the ball from on target to off target. A shot hitting the frame of the Goal is classified as a Shot Off Target unless the ball subsequently enters the net. A Blocked Shot is not classified as a Shot Off Target.”
What do shot numbers tell us about a striker?
They tell us that said striker has an eye for goal, and he receives excellent service from his team-mates in setting up the opportunities for him.
Generally, the more you take, the more chance you have of scoring. Mohamed Salah topped the goalscoring charts, while also registering the most shots last season. Similarly, Erling Haaland tops both charts in the early stages of 2025-26.
It is not always the case, though. Matheus Cunha has already registered seven shots in the Premier League this season without success, while the combined total of 16 from the Bournemouth duo of Evanilson and Antoine Semenyo has produced just three goals.
Who are the best shot-makers in Premier League history?
Shot stats only go back to the 2006-07 season in the Premier League, when Opta’s records began.
Wayne Rooney leads the way with 936, 41 ahead of another former England captain in Harry Kane. Sergio Aguero and Robin van Persie are also in the top five, as is Mohamed Salah.
The latter has 813 to his name, and after registering 104 last season, could start to threaten Rooney’s record with another injury-free campaign this term.
