Premier League shot stats 2026/27
Five matchweeks in, Erling Haaland leads the Premier League shot stats for 2026/27 with 20 attempts for Manchester City. He has also been the most accurate of the high-volume shooters, hitting the target ten times and scoring five.
The Manchester United pair of Bruno Fernandes and Bryan Mbeumo are next on 19 each. Neither has matched Haaland for return, though: Fernandes has five on target and three goals, Mbeumo six and two.
Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall has 18 for Everton and Cole Palmer 17 for Chelsea. Julio Enciso of Ipswich Town is the outlier on the list, because his 17 shots have brought nothing at all.
Volume without reward remains the theme worth watching. Enciso’s 17 attempts have produced 1.04 xG, which suggests he is shooting from positions that were never likely to pay — a different problem from simply being unlucky.
What is a shot?
Opta defines a shot on target as “a deliberate attempt to score that is on target. Includes all Goals being scored and shots on target saved by the Goalkeeper. It also includes shots on target that are Blocked by a last line defending player, preventing the ball from entering the Goal.”
Similarly for off target, it states: “A deliberate attempt to score that misses the target, without contact from a player diverting the ball from on target to off target. A shot hitting the frame of the Goal is classified as a Shot Off Target unless the ball subsequently enters the net. What do shot numbers tell us about a striker?
They tell us that said striker has an eye for goal, and he receives excellent service from his team-mates in setting up the opportunities for him.
Generally, the more you take, the more chance you have of scoring. Erling Haaland proved as much last season, topping the goalscoring charts with 27 while also registering the most shots with 126. Similarly, Bruno Fernandes tops both charts in the early stages of 2026-27.
It is not always the case, though. Diego Gómez has already registered eight shots in the Premier League this season without success, while the combined total of 15 from the Brentford pair of Igor Thiago and Kevin Schade has produced just one goal.
Who are the best shot-makers in Premier League history?
Shot stats only go back to the 2006-07 season in the Premier League, when Opta’s records began.
Wayne Rooney leads the way with 936, 41 ahead of another former England captain in Harry Kane. Sergio Aguero and Robin van Persie are also in the top five, as is Mohamed Salah.
The latter added 68 shots in 2026-27 to reach 881, but he has since left Liverpool for Trabzonspor. Rooney’s record looks safe for a while yet, then.
