What is a pass?
This may sound simple, but in terms of stats a pass still needs a definition. Opta defines a pass as the attempted delivery of the ball from one player to another — on the same team. A pass can come from any part of the body legally allowed to play the ball. The only things that aren’t counted as passes are crosses, throw ins and goalkeeper throws.
What do pass numbers tell us about a player?
There are so many qualifiers for passes that can be used to help assess the quality of a player. But on sheer volume of passes alone, you can often tell who teams look to build their possession through.
Centre-backs generally have the highest passing numbers for attempts and completed, with the way teams start from the back. Virgil van Dijk led the Premier League for passes attempted and completed in the Premier League in 2024-25. Moises Caicedo was the highest-ranked non-defender.
Accuracy is also a good barometer, to further delve into the best passers. For example, Bruno Fernandes attempted 2,020 passes in the Premier League in 2024-25 — but he “only” completed 81.53% of them. That was quite low among outfield players with at least 1,000 passes attempted.
Who are the best passers in Premier League history?
Unsurprisingly, defenders lead the way for successful short passes in the Premier League. Kyle Walker and Virgil van Dijk are the top two, and they’ll both be looking to edge closer to 20,000 passes as the 2025-26 season goes on. Jordan Henderson completes the top three, also chasing 20,000.
