England Women are looking to bring football home once more at the Women’s European Championship.
Sarina Wiegman’s side are the defending European champions, beating Germany in the Euro 2022 final at Wembley. However, the Germans remain the only team to ever retain the Women’s European Championship; doing so during their period of dominance which saw them win eight out of nine tournaments.
The win three years ago was the second time England had been in the Women’s European Championship final, having lost to Sweden in the very first edition of the tournament in 1984.
England had to work for their spot at Women’s Euro 2025, finishing second in their qualifying group behind France. The Lionesses won three, drew two and lost one of their six qualifying matches to finish one point off spot.
It meant they faced a tough Group D draw with a rematch against France, a battle between the last two European champions against the Netherlands, and a rivalry game against Wales.

England kicked off their Euros defence against France, in a rematch between sides who traded 2-1 wins during qualifying. France won here by the same scoreline, with England taking until the 87th minute to get on the scoresheet when they were already 2-0 down. That left the Lionesses with an uphill battle to win Group D, or even make it through at all.

A meeting between the past two European champions, England had to win this one. Defeat would have likely seen the Lionesses knocked out after two games, with Wales not fancied to get a result against France. England were a lot better against the Netherlands and made their early control count, with a goal Lauren James. Georgia Stanway made it 2-0 just before half-time to provide some comfort for England fans. And the Lionesses were in control in the second half, adding two more goals with another from James and Ella Toone. It put England in a good position to reach the quarter-finals.

Wales were at the Women’s European Championship for the first time, but required a victory by at least four goals in order to extend their participation. However, it was England who were 4-0 up by half-time, with Georgia Stanway, Ella Toone, Lauren Hemp and Alessia Russo all on target. Further strikes from Beth Mead and Angie Beever-Jones in the final 20 minutes completed the rout, while securing second place in Group D.

As Group D runners-up, England faced Group C winners Sweden in the quarter-finals. The two sides met in qualifying for Euro 2025, with both matches finishing level. And there was another draw in the quarter-finals. England went behind early and trailed by two goals for a long time, looking on their way out of the match. But goals from Lucy Bronze and Michelle Agyemang sealed an unlikely comeback from England. The game went all the way to penalties, with the drama not stopping there. Nine of the 14 penalties from both teams were either saved or missed, with England handed a lot of lifelines. They eventually got over the line with a 3-2 shootout victory.

England’s reward for overcoming the odds against Sweden was a semi-final against Italy. And the Lionesses didn’t make this one easy for themselves either. They left it to the 95th minute to equalise after Barbara Bonansea gave Italy a first-half lead. Agyemang was once again the hero. Chloe Kelly scored the winner late in extra time, a rebound from a saved penalty.

England are in the final of third successive major tournament. And it’s a repeat of the one final they’ve lost, against Spain. A rematch of the 2023 World Cup final is on the cards, but these two have faced off more recently. The pair shared wins in the Uefa Nations League earlier this year.
