The Euro 2024 dream continues for Romania as they are in the last 16 having finished top of Group E.

Romania in their sixth European Championship, but this is just the second time that they have made it past the group stage. At Euro 2000 Romania finished second in their group ahead of England and Germany, beating the Three Lions in their sole victory.

This time around, Ukraine were the team to fall to Romania in the Euros, and they relied on that opening game victory. Despite losing to Belgium, Romania drew their final group match to finish top on goals scored.

Romania’s potential knockout stage opponents

As Group E winners, Romania face Group D’s third-placed side Netherlands in the last 16. Should they get through that, it’s either Austria or Turkey in the quarter-finals.

In the semi-finals, based on favourites, England would be the most likely opponents. But it could just as easily be Switzerland given how easily they dispatched Italy. And, finally, one of Germany, Spain, France or Portugal will await in Berlin.

Eyes were on George Puscas before the tournament, but Razvan Marin has stepped up for goals at Euro 2024 so far. The 28-year-old midfielder has scored two goals at Euro 2024 so far, with only one player at the tournament netting more. One of those goals was a penalty against Slovakia, but Marin was also involved in the romp over Ukraine. He also leads Romania for shots with six so far.

This will definitely come as a surprise to fans as Marin had only scored three goals in his previous 55 games before the start of Euro 2024. Marin also didn’t score at all for Empoli last season.

He has set up two of Romania’s four goals so far, setting up Nicolae Stanciu and Denis Dragus in their opening win over Ukraine. Unsurprisingly, Man also leads the way for Romania in chances created, with four so far. And he’s the only Romania player to create a big chance.

Marius Marin has sat at the base of Romania’s midfield in all three of their Euro 2024 games so far, and he’s been the man to stop opposition attacks. Marin has made eight tackles, two more than Andrei Ratiu among his Romania teammates. His four fouls is second only to Denis Dragus, while Marin is also one of five Romania players to be booked at the tournament so far.

Radu Dragusin is the youngest player in Romania’s squad and their only player under the age of 23. Despite not playing too much for Tottenham after his winter move, Dragusin has been key at the heart of Romania’s defence. Euro 2024 could be his launchpad.

Lining up in a 4-3-3 or 4-1-4-1, Marius Marin is the holding man with Razvan Marin and Nicolae Stanciu starting alongside him. Denis Dragus has got the nod up front over George Puscas, with Florinel Coman and Dennis Man the favoured wingers.
