Who are the favourites to win the African Cup of Nations?

The African Cup of Nations always provides drama and entertainment in spades, and this winter’s tournament was been no different. Who looks to be the favourites for the 2027 tournament?

Morocco

Morocco were the favourites to win the 2025 competition and, despite making it to the final, fell at the final hurdle. It was an incredible tournament for The Atlas Lions, with just two goals being conceded along the way.

The Atlas Lions beat Comoros in their first game before being held to a 1-1 draw against Mali. They were able to seal their qualification to the knockout stages with a 3-0 win over Zambia, setting up a round of 16 tie with Tanzania. That proved to be a tight game but one that Morocco, ultimately, came out on top of thanks to a Brahim Diaz goal.

The quarter-final saw Morocco win with a clean sheet once again. This time it was Cameroon put to the sword, with the Atlas Lions winning 2-0. Their semi-final proved to be their toughest test yet, with Nigeria taking them all the way to penalties. Youssef En-Nesyri dispatched the crucial winning penalty to send Morocco to a home final but they were unable to find a way through Senegal, picking up runners up medals as a result.

Looking ahead to 2027, Morocco still look to be in a strong position. Their key players in Achraf Hakimi, Brahim Diaz and Ismael Saibari will still be under 30 years of age and the likes of Bilal Nadir and Ilias Akhomach will be hoping to make more of an impact on the national team.

Senegal

Senegal’s victory in Morocco means they have won two of the last three Afcon tournaments, making them the sixth most successful African team of all time.

Their 2025 Afcon tournament was, obviously, hugely successful and was built on dominance in the group stage followed by well fought, narrow victories in the knockout stages. They beat both Botswana and Benin by 3-0 scorelines, with a 1-1 draw with Congo sealing their route to the knockout stages.

The round of 16 saw them overcome Sudan 3-1, with their following matches in the quarter, semi and final all being settled by a 1-0 scoreline.

The 2027 Afcon tournament might see a very different Senegal side take to the pitch. The likes of Sadio Mane, Idrissa Gueye and Kalidou Koulibaly will all be 35 or older and their places in the team might not be so assured. There are a new crop of youngsters coming through for the Lions of Teranga, though. Mamadou Sarr, Pape Matar Sarr and Ibrahim Mbaye will all be approaching their prime and it could be another exciting tournament for Senegal and their supporters.

Egypt

Egypt are the most successful team in AFCON history, having won this competition seven times, but their 2025 campaign ended in disappointment, with The Pharaohs being eliminated at the semi-final stage.

Egypt had a strange group stage campaign, taking seven points from a possible nine but only scoring three goals. They were able to put their poor showing in front of goal behind them, though, scoring six goals across the round of 16 and quarter-final in wins over Benin and Ivory Coast. It all fell apart in the semi-final for Egypt, with Senegal beating them 1-0 in what proved to be a tepid performance for the much-fancied Egyptian side.

The baton might have to be passed in the Egypt squad for the 2027 Afcon tournament, with talisman Mo Salah turning 35 before the start of the competition. While there are some other talented players within the ranks for Egypt, none of them have the potential to eclipse Salah’s accomplishments and it’s possible that Egypt fans might have to get used to disappointment.

Nigeria

Nigeria have cemented their place as one of top African teams around, with a final appearance in 2023 and reaching the semi-final in 2025. Despite coming up short on both occasions, things look promising for the Super Eagles.

Their 2025 was one filled with goals, with Nigeria scoring eight goals in three games in the group stages, beating Tanzania, Tunisia and Uganda to take maximum points. This continued in the knockout stages, with Nigeria beating Mozambique 4-0 and Algeria 2-0 to set up a semi-final with hosts, Morocco. Things ended badly for Nigeria, with them crashing out on penalties.

Only five players in the 2025 Nigeria squad were over 30, showing that they’ve got a young squad capable of going even further in 2027. Their frontline will be the envy of the rest of the continent, with Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman and Samuel Chukwueze all being elite forwards.

AFCON Top Goalscorer odds

There weren’t a huge amount of goals at Afcon 2025, with an average of 2.33 goals per match. Brahim Diaz, of Morocco, was named the top scorer with six goals, finishing just ahead of Mo Salah and Victor Osimhen on five.

The odds haven’t been released for the 2027 tournament yet but, rest assured, they will be right here as soon as they are available.
