With so much focus now on goalkeepers being the first point of attack, it’s easy to forget the job they’re primarily there to do: keep the ball out of the net.
A number of the world’s best goalkeepers have plied their trade in the Bundesliga over the years, from Bayern Munich legends past and present Oliver Kahn and Manuel Neuer, to Harald “Toni” Schumacher, who is the only goalkeeper to play for Bayern, Dortmund and Schalke.
That continues to be the case today. Just last season, RB Leipzig’s Peter Gulacsi topped the pile for clean sheets (15) and fewest goals conceded (30), closely followed by the likes of Koen Casteels of Wolfsburg. Of course, had Manuel Neuer and Lukas Hradecky been fit for the full 34 games, they’d have both come much closer in the final standings. Augsburg’s Rafal Gikiewicz was the busiest goalkeeper in the German top-flight, making 129 saves.
This season Neuer is back at the top with seven clean sheets in 19 matches so far, level with Robin Zentner and Mark Flekken. But things are so close at the top with a further three players just one clean sheet back including Casteels.
