What to watch (editor’s note, 28 Sep): Opening week decides which of the preseason favourites get their chance first. Toronto host Montréal on opening night, 29 September, the first chance for Gavin McKenna to make his NHL debut. Porter Martone and the Flyers start a night later against Pittsburgh, and Ivar Stenberg’s Sharks host Florida on 1 October. Early rookie tables swing on a single game, so the order means little before Halloween.

The Calder Trophy race

The Calder Trophy goes to the rookie of the year. The Professional Hockey Writers’ Association votes at the end of the regular season, and the award is announced in June. Points drive most ballots, but not all of them: Matthew Schaefer won the 2026 vote unanimously as a defenceman, and the last goaltender to win was Steve Mason in 2009.

Two forwards led the betting when the 2026-27 market opened. Bet99’s board on 30 July 2026 had Porter Martone of Philadelphia at +275, a shade ahead of Gavin McKenna, the first overall pick now in Toronto, at +310. Our Calder Trophy odds page carries the current prices, ten years of winners with the odds they opened at, and the voting patterns behind them.

Teemu Selänne’s 132 points and 76 goals for the Winnipeg Jets in 1992-93 have stood for more than 30 years. The realistic target for a modern rookie is the since-2000 line: Alex Ovechkin scored 106 in 2005-06, and Sidney Crosby had 102 the same season. A pace line appears here once the leader has 10 games.

Who counts as an NHL rookie

The NHL’s definition is stricter than a first season. A player cannot have appeared in more than 25 NHL games in any previous season, or in six or more games in each of two previous seasons, and he must be under 26 on 15 September of the season. That is why Porter Martone still qualifies after nine games last spring. It is also why a 24-year-old arriving from Sweden or Russia can be a rookie. The Calder Trophy page explains where the age limit came from.

The 2025-26 rookie class

Three rookies reached 59 points or more in 2025-26. Ivan Demidov led the class with 62 points for the Montréal Canadiens, and Beckett Sennecke of the Anaheim Ducks had 60. Matthew Schaefer scored 23 goals and 59 points on the Islanders’ blue line, matching Brian Leetch’s rookie record for goals by a defenceman, on his way to a unanimous Calder vote.

Betting on the rookie race

Three markets hang off these tables. The Calder Trophy future is the main one, a voted award priced from July in which a defenceman or a goaltender can beat the top scorer, as Schaefer did in 2026. Season-long points and goals props are the second. The third is the nightly market on a rookie’s shots or points.

Two cautions. Rookie tables are noisy until players have 15 or 20 games, because one hot week can lift a depth player onto the first page. And ice time decides most Calder races: a rookie with 18 minutes a night and a power-play role has a different ceiling from one playing 11 even-strength minutes, which is why the main table carries a TOI column. The Calder Trophy odds page covers the board, and the futures betting guide explains how season-long markets settle.
