Charlton Athletic 2026/27 Championship Preview

Charlton Athletic endured a difficult second season back in the Championship, finishing 19th with just 53 points and narrowly avoiding the drop back to League One. The Addicks won only 13 of their 46 league games, drew 14 and lost 19, while a return of just 44 goals scored was the joint-lowest in the division. Defensive solidity kept them afloat – goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski was a standout with 105 saves and 11 clean sheets – but Nathan Jones’ side simply couldn’t find the net often enough.

Perhaps the most telling statistic of Charlton’s 2025/26 campaign is that midfielder Sonny Carey was the club’s top scorer with eight goals. Charlie Kelman led the forwards with seven (including two penalties), while January arrival Lyndon Dykes chipped in with three goals and three assists from 20 appearances after joining from Birmingham City mid-season. It was a collective attacking failure that almost cost them their second-tier status.

The summer transfer window has been a relatively quiet affair, with Nathan Jones working on a tight budget. The headline business has been making Karlan Grant’s move permanent on a free transfer from West Brom after the forward scored four goals in 27 appearances on loan last term. Two new centre-backs have come through the door in Billy Koumetio, the former Liverpool academy prospect signed from Scottish Premiership side Dundee, and Ivan Mesík from Dutch second division outfit Heracles Almelo. However, the loss of experienced loanee Conor Coady, who has returned to Wrexham, leaves a leadership void at the heart of the defence.

The bookmakers are not optimistic about Charlton’s prospects, pricing them at 100/1 to win the Championship and just 5/4 for relegation. Survival will once again be the primary objective, and Jones will need significantly more from his forwards if the Addicks are to avoid being dragged into another nervous finish.
