Man City odds to win the Premier League 2024/25: Predicted finish, transfers, best players & full squad

Published: 15:30, 14 March 2025

Manchester City went into the 2024-25 Premier League season hoping to continue their domination of the English top flight.

No English men’s team had ever won the top flight in four successive seasons before Man City achieved the feat last season. The question was: would they beat able to achieve the five-peat?

The answer it seems is a resounding no, as City have endured their most difficult campaign of the Pep Guardiola so far, sitting in fifth place after 28 games and a huge 23 points behind league leaders Liverpool at this stage.

With Champions League qualification on the line, the Citizens will have to improve their form drastically if the season is to end in anything other than a relative disaster.

Man City’s January transfer window business

Man City transfers in

After a quiet summer for incomings at Man City, Pep Guardiola moved to bring in a handful of new signings in January in an attempt to rescue what has been a pretty poor campaign for the Citizens so far.

Four players joined the Citizens’ first-team squad for a combined £175m. Central defenders Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis arrived from Lens and Palmeiras respectively, alongside midfielder Nico Gonzalez from Porto and, in arguably the most eye-catching transfer of the window, attacker Omar Marmoush from Eintracht Frankfurt.

Man City transfers out

City have been low on numbers at times this season after injuries, so it was no surprise that they opted against selling any of their first-team players during the January window, although Kyle Walker joined AC Milan on loan.

Who are Man City’s most important players?

Man City’s top Premier League Golden Boot contender: Erling Haaland

  • Key stat: Erling Haaland has scored 20 goals in 28 Premier League games in 2024-25.

Erling Haaland didn’t have as strong a season as many expected him to have in 2023-24, only scoring 27 goals in 31 Premier League games. It was a monumental fall from the 36 he scored in 35 matches in his debut Premier League campaign. With a record of 63 goals in 66 games, there was no need for Premier League defences to worry about Haaland anymore…

There was some criticism about Haaland and how he fits in Man City’s team, having 24.54 touches per 90 minutes in 2022-23 compared to 26.91 in 2023-24. But he did average more shots and shots on targets per 90 minutes in the Premier League last season than in his debut campaign.

And, of course, he’s continued being clinical this season, during which he became the quickest player ever to reach double figures in a single campaign.

After 28 games, Haaland has scored 20 goals and is already just 16 goals away from joining the Premier League 100 club.

Man City’s primary playmaker: Kevin De Bruyne

  • Key stat: Kevin De Bruyne has chalked up 0.37 xA per game in the Premier League this season

Kevin De Bruyne remains one of the most creative players in world football and, even with more fitness issues rearing their ugly head this season, the Belgian has continued to be City’s creative force when he has been fit enough to play.

He’s chalked up 0.4 expected assists per 90 minutes in the Premier League this season, leading to a total of six assists – a tally only bettered at the club by Savinho, who has played four more games.

De Bruyne also leads the way for chances created (41, level with Phil Foden) and big chances created (11) for City this term.

Man City’s card magnets & top tacklers: Mateo Kovacic

  • Key stat: Mateo Kovacic has made more tackles (53) than any other Man City player this season.

Rodri was Man City’s defensive screen last season and at the start of this, but he is out for the remainder of this campaign through injury.

The Spaniard has been a massive loss. But in his absence, Pep Guardiola has been reliant on Kovacic for defensive resilience. The Croatia international has made more tackles (53) than any other Man City player so far this season, while he’s won possession in the middle third eight more times (53) than any team-mate.

Man City’s rising star: James McAtee

Oscar Bobb was our initial pick for this, but the Norwegian fractured his leg just before the Premier League season.

McAtee has been included in the majority of City’s matchday squads, and he has scored a couple of goals, despite only managing 120 Premier League minutes.

However, his most memorable contribution undoubtedly came in the FA Cup, when he scored a hat-trick during the third-round rout of Salford City.

Man City’s set-piece specialists:

  • Penalties: Erling Haaland
  • Free kicks: Ilkay Gundogan
  • Corners: Ilkay Gundogan/Kevin De Bruyne

Man City’s tactical analysis, formation & player ratings

Man City’s team stats from the 2024/25 Premier League season (avg per game as of 14/03/25):

  • Corners: 7.41
  • Shots on target: 5.89
  • Shots on target conceded: 3.83*
  • Offsides: 1.21*

Manchester City 2024-25 player ratings*

  • GK: Ederson – 54% – Although he remains excellent on the ball, he has still only kept five clean sheets this season.
  • RB: Rico Lewis – 68% – Despite having been displaced by Matheus Nunes of late, Lewis’ early-season performances were enough to convince Pep Guardiola to allow Kyle Walker to leave on loan for AC Milan.
  • CB: Ruben Dias – 66% – He continues to be the leader of this Man City defence and has been excellent on the ball again, while losing just 0.2 challenges per 90 minutes so far this season.
  • CB: Manuel Akanji – 54% – Like Dias, Akanji’s primary duties are with the ball, but his defending has left a bit to be desired in recent months. Indeed, he has won just 0.53 tackles per game.
  • LB: Josko Gvardiol – 67% – Earlier this season, Gvardiol was the top-performing player in his position according to the Squawka Score. However, he’s since been overtaken by the likes of Milos Kerkez and Lewis Hall, having made seven errors leading to shots – the joint-most of any player this term (level with Chelsea’s Robert Sanchez).
  • DM: Mateo Kovacic – 66% – Covering for the long-term absence of Rodri (80%), Kovacic has provided a good defensive platform for Man City, and is always composed with the ball.
  • DM: Ilkay Gundogan – 57% – On his return to Man City, Gundogan has not quite looked the same player he once was, managing less than one interception (0.75), one take-on completed (0.81) and one tackle won (0.62) per 90 minutes.
  • CAM: Bernardo Silva – 51% – It’s been hard to judge Silva this season, as he’s been playing in several different positions. He was one of City’s driving forces at the start of the season, but has created only eight big chances and scored only twice at this stage
  • FWD: Phil Foden – 68% – One of few players who has improved as the season has gone on for City, Foden has managed 6.58 penalty area entries per 90* and has seven goals to his name.
  • FWD: Savinho – 69% – Savinho has picked up his form again of late and he remains high up for the winger rankings, averaging 2.74 completed take-ons per game and 0.6 big chances created. Only one goal to his name so far, though.
  • CF: Erling Haaland – 79% – Haaland is only the third-best striker in the Premier League this season among those with at least 50% of the minutes played, behind Alexander Isak and Diogo Jota*. The Norwegian does lead the way for non-penalty xG with 18.35.

Guardiola has had to deal with a lot of injury issues this season, forcing him to field makeshift defences at times. But the absences have allowed the likes of Lewis and Savinho to shine at different times.

Guardiola has tried a few different systems this term, including a back three. Recently, he’s reverted to a four at the back on a more regular basis, with Nunes filling at right-back.

Positive news for Pep Guardiola

Going into the new season, there were a lot of doubts surrounding the future of Guardiola. The Catalan’s contract was set to expire this summer, and he had hinted that his could be his final campaign in charge.

These rumours were made stronger by Jurgen Klopp leaving Liverpool. Would Guardiola have the idea of leaving the Premier League planted in his mind?

While a departure may still come sooner rather than later, it appears that it won’t happen this summer after he signed a new contract until the summer of 2026. There is reportedly also an option to extend the stay until 2027, so we could still have another two years of Guardiola in charge at Man City.

Should Guardiola stay until the end of his contract, not including the extension, he will have hit 10 years in charge at the Etihad Stadium, having replaced Manuel Pellegrini in July 2016.

In his first season, Man City finished third, behind Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, but that was the only time they have finished outside the top two since Guardiola took charge. Indeed, they’ve won the title six times, including the current streak of four in a row.

Guardiola’s first Premier League title was a record-breaking one, as Man City became the first side to hit 100 points in the division. They also broke the record for most goals in a single campaign, scoring 106.

In fact, City have scored more than 90 goals in six of Guardiola’s eight full seasons in charge. They only failed in his first campaign and in 2020-21.

Guardiola surpassed 500 games in charge of Man City across all competitions earlier this season. At the time of writing, he has won 364 of those, plus an additional five victories on penalties.

The Citizens have won the Champions League, Club World Cup, FA Cup twice and EFL Cup four times, alongside their six Premier League titles during his tenure.

Despite their difficult 2024-25 campaign, City fans were ecstatic when The Athletic broke news of his contract extension.

Opposition fans were not as happy. Although, some were holding onto the hope that Man City could face relegation with regards to their charges for allegedly breaking financial rules.

Using extensive research and our expertise, we’ve tailored each score to the player’s position. For example, forwards’ scores are based on metrics such as shots on target, touches in the opposition box and big chances created. Meanwhile, centre-backs are rewarded for winning aerial duels, making blocks, successful long-range passes and so on.
