Man City odds to win the Premier League 2024/25: Predicted finish, transfers, best players & full squad

Published: 14:00, 20 November 2024

Manchester City went into the 2024-25 Premier League season hoping to continue their domination of the English top flight.

No English men’s team had ever won the top flight in four successive seasons before Man City achieved the feat last season. The question was, would they beat able to achieve the five-peat?

At the moment, Man City have a bit of a mountain to climb. After an unbeaten start to the season, Man City have now lost their past two matches. It leaves them five points behind early leaders Liverpool. As a result, they have a 30.8% chance of winning the title per implied improbability, down from the start of the season.

Man City’s summer transfer window business

Man City transfers in

It was a quiet summer for incomings at Man City, with just two new faces added — one new and one old. Savinho joined from sister club Troyes, having featured in Girona’s Champions League qualification-securing campaign in La Liga last season. And there was a return to the Etihad for Ilkay Gundogan on a free transfer, one year after he left for Barcelona.

Man City transfers out

The most significant departure for Man City in the summer was Julian Alvarez, who joined Atletico Madrid for a club-record fee. Also going out the doors of the Etihad were the likes of Joao Cancelo, Liam Delap and Sergio Gomez, among several loanees.

Who are Man City’s most important players?

Man City’s top Premier League Golden Boot contender: Erling Haaland

  • Key stat: Erling Haaland has scored 12 goals in his first 11 Premier League games in 2024-25.

Erling Haaland didn’t have as strong a season as many expected him to have in 2023-24, only scoring 27 goals in 31 Premier League games. It was a monumental fall from the 36 he scored in 35 matches in his debut Premier League campaign. With a record of 63 goals in 66 games, there was no need for Premier League defences to worry about Haaland anymore.

There was some criticism about Haaland and how he fits in Man City’s team, having 24.54 touches per 90 minutes in 2022-23 compared to 26.91 in 2023-24. But he did average more shots and shots on targets per 90 minutes in the Premier League last season than in his debut campaign.

And, of course, he’s continued being clinical this season. After 11 games, Haaland has already scored 12 goals, becoming the quickest-ever player to reach double figures in the Premier League. The Norwegian has now scored 75 goals in 77 games in the Premier League.

Man City’s primary playmaker: Bernardo Silva

  • Key stat: Bernardo Silva has averaged 2.48 chances created per 90 minutes this season.

Kevin De Bruyne remains one of the most creative players in world football, but he’s only played 373 minutes in the Premier League this season. In his stead, Bernardo Silva has picked up some of the creative responsibilities. The Portuguese midfielder has created 23 chances so far this season, more than any other Man City player. Silva also leads for big chances created (five).

Unsurprisingly, Silva has also provided more assists than any other Man City player with three, from an Expected Assists value of 1.84. Silva’s numbers aren’t inflated by set-pieces either, with 1.84 xA coming from open play.

Man City’s card magnets & top tacklers: Mateo Kovacic

  • Key stat: Mateo Kovacic has made more tackles (22) than any other Man City player this season.

Rodri was Man City’s defensive screen last season and at the start of this, but he’s now set to miss the rest of the campaign through injury.

The Spaniard has been a massive loss. But in his absence, Pep Guardiola has been reliant on Mateo Kovacic for defensive resilience. The Croatia international has made more tackles (22) than any other Man City player so far this season, while he’s won possession in the middle third eight more times (29) than any teammate.

You still wonder, though, if Man City will make a move in this position when the January window comes around.

Man City’s rising star: James McAtee

Oscar Bobb was our initial pick for this, but the Norwegian fractured his leg just before the Premier League season. It came after Bobb starred in Man City’s win over Man United in the Community Shield. James McAtee starred in the Community Shield and has been on the bench in all 11 of Man City’s Premier League games. While that has only translated to one minute against Ipswich, McAtee is certain to get more playing time across the campaign, especially if Man City go far in all competitions. McAtee has also featured in the EFL Cup and scored against Slovan Bratislava in the Champions League.

Man City’s set-piece specialists:

  • Penalties: Erling Haaland
  • Free kicks: Ilkay Gundogan
  • Corners: Ilkay Gundogan/Kevin De Bruyne

Man City’s tactical analysis, formation & player ratings

Man City’s team stats from the 2023-24 Premier League season (avg per game):

  • Corners: 7.53
  • Shots on target: 7.32
  • Shots on target conceded: 2.92
  • Offsides: 1.11

Manchester City 2024-25 player ratings*

  • GK: Ederson – 61% – Seems to have settled again after worries he would leave the club in the summer. Remains excellent on the ball, though he has still only kept two clean sheets this season.
  • RB: Rico Lewis – 69% – Kyle Walker also scores at 64% but now aged 34, Guardiola appears to be rotating him. Rico Lewis has been the man to come in and the youngster has done well so far.
  • CB: Ruben Dias – 67% – Continues to be the leader of this Man City defence and has been excellent on the ball again, with just 6.69 losses of possession per 90.
  • CB: Manuel Akanji – 65% – Like Dias, Akanji’s primary duties are with the ball, completing 85.71% of his forward passes. The Swiss centre-back also has just 5.52 losses of possession per 90.
  • LB: Josko Gvardiol – 78% – Gvardiol is the top-performing player in his position this season according to the Squawka Score, proving incredibly tough to beat on the ground and in the air. Has scored three times.
  • DM: Mateo Kovacic – 71% – Covering for the long-term absence of Rodri (80%), Mateo Kovacic has provided a good defensive platform for Man City and is always composed with the ball.
  • DM: Ilkay Gundogan – 60% – On his return to Man City, Ilkay Gundogan has been a reliable body in midfield. He has completed 92.17% of his open-play passes and 86.96% of his passes into the final third.
  • CAM: Phil Foden – 43% – Phil Foden had a delayed start to the season and he’s still waiting to get up and running. The Englishman has provided just one assist so far, averaging 0.59 big chances created per 90.
  • FWD: Savinho – 69% – Savinho has quietened down slightly after a fast start to the season, providing three assists in his first four matches. But he remains high up for the winger rankings, averaging 3.57 completed take-ons per 90.
  • CF: Erling Haaland – 81% – Erling Haaland is the best striker in the Premier League this season among those with at least 50% of the minutes played. The Norwegian has scored 1.09 goals per 90 minutes, and also leads for non-penalty xG at 0.94 per 90.
  • FWD: Matheus Nunes – 55% – It’s been hard to judge Matheus Nunes this season as he’s been playing on the wing. But he has still been effective, with 0.62 intentional assists and 8.35 touches in the opposition box per 90.

Pep Guardiola has had to deal with a lot of injury issues this season, forcing him to field makeshift defences at times. But the absences have allowed the likes of Rico Lewis and Savinho to shine. Guardiola has tried a few different systems this season including a back three. At the moment, he’s settled on a 4-1-4-1 that operates more like a 4-2-3-1, with Gundogan dropping slightly deeper.

Positive news for Pep Guardiola

Going into the new season, there were a lot of doubts surrounding the future of Pep Guardiola. The Catalan’s contract was set to expire this summer, and he had hinted that his could be his final campaign in charge of Man City. These rumours were made stronger by Jurgen Klopp leaving Liverpool. Would Guardiola have the idea of leaving the Premier League planted in his mind?

While a departure may still come sooner rather than later, it appears that it won’t happen this summer. According to reports, Guardiola is set to sign a new contract with Man City taking him to the summer of 2026. There is reportedly also an option to extend the stay until 2027. So we could have another 30 months of Guardiola in charge at Man City.

Should Guardiola stay until the end of his contract, not including the extension, he will have hit 10 years in charge of Man City. Guardiola joined Man City for the 2016-17 season, replacing Manuel Pellegrini who had led the club to the league title in 2013-14.

In his first season Man City finished third, behind Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur. But that was the only time Man City have finished outside the top two since Guardiola took charge. They’ve won the title six times, including the current streak of four in a row.

Guardiola’s first Premier League title was a record-breaking one, as Man City became the first side to hit 100 points in the division. They also broke the record for most goals in a single campaign, scoring 106. In fact, Man City have scored more than 90 goals in six of Guardiola’s eight full seasons in charge. They only failed in his first season and in 2020-21.

Overall, Guardiola is nearing 500 games in charge of Man City across all competitions. At 490 so far, Guardiola has won 355 of those plus an extra five victories on penalties. Man City have won the Champions League, Club World Cup, FA Cup twice and EFL Cup four times alongside their six Premier League titles under Guardiola.

Naturally, Man City fans were ecstatic at the news, broken by the Athletic.

Opposition fans were not as happy. Although some were holding onto the hope that Man City could face relegation with regards to their charges for allegedly breaking financial rules.

Using extensive research and our expertise, we’ve tailored each score to the player’s position. For example, forwards’ scores are based on metrics such as shots on target, touches in the opposition box and big chances created. Meanwhile, centre-backs are rewarded for winning aerial duels, making blocks, successful long-range passes and so on.
