Chelsea Club World Cup group stage results

Chelsea were drawn into Group D alongside Flamengo, LAFC, and ES Tunis. The top two teams from each group will advance to the knockout stage. Given their squad depth and experience, Chelsea were favourites to top the group but they did have to settle for second.

Matchday 1: Chelsea 2-0 LAFC

  • Date: 16th June 2025
  • Venue: Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta
  • Kick-off: 8pm (UK time)

Chelsea opened the Club World Cup with a hard-fought win over Major League Soccer side Los Angeles FC. Pedro Neto and Enzo Fernandez got the goals for Chelsea, striking 11 minutes before half-time and full-time respectively.

Matchday 2: Flamengo 3-1 Chelsea

  • Date: 20th June 2025
  • Venue: Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia
  • Kick-off: 7pm (UK time)

This was always set to be Chelsea’s toughest group stage game, though they were still expected to win. But the Blues faltered and were completely outplayed by their Brazilian opponents despite taking the lead. Chelsea eventually lost 3-1 and saw Nicolas Jackson sent off, unable to finish top of the group.

Matchday 3: Esperance Tunis 0-3 Chelsea

  • Date: 25th June 2025
  • Venue: Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia
  • Kick-off: 2am (UK time)

Chelsea needed to avoid defeat to Esperance Tunis in their final group game to seal second. It took Chelsea until just before half time to open the scoring, but they went into the break two goals up thanks to Tosin Adarabioyo and Liam Delap. Tyrique George put the gloss on the win deep into second-half injury time, sealing Chelsea’s spot in the last 16.

Chelsea route to the final

Despite finishing as Group D runners-up, things worked out well for Chelsea. They faced Benfica in the last 16, with the Portuguese side finishing above Bayern Munich in Group C. Chelsea were made to work hard for their win, though they were well worth the victory. The Blues led 1-0 going into the final five minutes before a 45-minute weather delay. Once play resumed, Chelsea conceded a late penalty which was converted to take the game to extra time. But Chelsea scored three more goals to seal the 4-1 victory and a spot in the quarter-finals.

Chelsea faced Palmeiras in the quarter-finals, a repeat of the 2021 Club World Cup Final. The Blues won that final 2-1 and that was the score this time around too. Cole Palmer opened the scoring for Chelsea before Blues-bound Estevao equalised. But a late own goal sent Chelsea through to the semi-finals.

There, Chelsea beat another Brazilian side in Fluminense. Joao Pedro scored both goals for Chelsea, sending them to their third Club World Cup final. The Blues will face Paris Saint-Germain at the MetLife Stadium.
