The 2022-23 NHL season has reached its climax, with the Florida Panthers and Vegas Golden Knights battling for the Stanley Cup.
This year’s series will generate a first-time winner, with both sides desperate to etch their names onto the famous old trophy having previously fallen at the final hurdle.
The Panthers did so at the hands of the Colorado Avalanche in 1996, with the Golden Knights doing the same against the Washington Capitals 22 years later.
The Golden Knights topped the Western Conference, but were made to work for their place in the Stanley Cup Finals. Indeed, after beating the Winnipeg Jets in five games, they required six to overcome the Edmonton Oilers and Dallas Stars.
Meanwhile the Panthers, who entered the playoffs as the Eastern Conference’s eighth seeds, have not looked back since recovering from 3-1 down to deny the Boston Bruins in Game 7 overtime, losing just a single game in sweeping aside the Toronto Maple Leafs and Carolina Hurricanes.
Therefore, they certainly boast the stronger momentum of the two finalists, although the Golden Knights do have the home advantage.
