The Greek side are bidding to make history and become the first senior men’s team from their country ever to win a European club football competition. For Fiorentina, victory would be their first European trophy since their 1961 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup triumph.
Viola have had a mixed season, but have found some good form towards the end of the campaign, losing just one of their last seven in all competitions. Olympiakos have had a disappointing campaign by their standards, finishing behind both PAOK Solina and AEK Athens in the table, the first time they have finished outside the top two in back-to-back seasons since 1995/96. But victory in this showpiece final would certainly turn their season into a success, also securing Europa League football.
The Greek side started the season in the Europa League but finished third in their group, dropping to the Conference League knockout round play-offs. There, they beat Ferencvaros, before also seeing off Maccabi Tel Aviv, Fenerbahce and Aston Villa.
Olympiakos’ Moroccan forward Ayoub El Kaabi has been a goal machine this season, netting 34 times in all competitions, including five across the two legs of the Europa Conference League semi-final against Aston Villa.
