Bayern Munich are currently perfect in the Basketball Bundesliga having won all three of their games so far, only below leaders Telekom Baskets Bonn on points difference at this early stage. But they haven’t been able to translate that form over to the EuroLeague. In fact, it’s been the exact opposite.
After securing back-to-back quarterfinal appearances in 2020/21 and 2021/22, Bayern have lost their opening three matches of the 2022/23 EuroLeague campaign and sit bottom of the regular season table. In their first two matches, Bayern were beaten by Fenerbahce and Virtus Bologna, first unable to keep up with superior opponents and then paying the price for a poor opening quarter. Last time out Bayern faced Barcelona and having started well eventually fell away, particularly in the third quarter, to lose 84-73.
Olimpia Milano, on the other hand, bounced back from defeat last time out to beat Partizan in midweek. The Italian side finished third in EuroLeague last season and will be looking to build on that in their search of a first top-tier continental crown since the 1987/88 European Champions Cup.
In their first game, Milano beat LDLC ASVEL 69-62 but were then beaten 80-74 by German champions ALBA Berlin in overtime. Last time out Milano took on strugglers Partizan, and they had to show their mettle after going in behind at halftime. But they came back with a 13-point turnaround in the second half to ultimately win out 80-75, lifting them up to fifth in the table – though some teams are yet to play their third matches at the time of writing.
