In a fitting end to the campaign, the playoffs have pit the top two sides of the regular season off against each other to see who is the best team of the LNB Pro A. ASVEL Basket were the no.1 side in the regular season, finishing on 26 wins from their 34 games, one clear of second-placed Monaco.
That put them up against eighth-placed Cholet in the quarter-finals but they did have to overcome a scare to advance, losing the first game 74-70 before a slightly comfortable 82-66 victory and the tightest of margins in a 84-82 win. In that same round, Monaco also had to come from behind against seventh-placed Strasbourg and they were made to work even harder for their spot in the semi-finals, losing 100-87 before taking 97-95 and 82-80 victories which both came in overtime.
The semi-finals were a lot more straightforward for ASVEL as they did the clean sweep over Dijon, winning the five-game series in three with 81-68, 101-90 and 73-61 victories. Monaco, meanwhile, needed four to beat Pau-Lacq-Orthez but it was still a straightforward victory. It started with 94-65 and 79-72 victories but Monaco were denied the clean sweep by a 82-76 defeat, before taking the semi-finals with one final 85-83 win.
So, the top two teams were facing off to the take the crown. The defending, and record champions, ASVEL against a Monaco team looking for their first title in a third playoff final. Monaco got off to an excellent start in the five-game series, taking the first 83-80 but they were quickly brought back down to earth with a 91-54 thrashing. Monaco once again took the advantage with an 83-80 victory in Game 3 that put them one win away from the title, but ASVEL had another fairly commanding 85-68 victory, inspired by Chris Jones and Marcos Knight to take the playoffs to Game 5.
