Group J at World Cup 2026 sees Argentina begin their campaign looking to win back-to-back tournaments.
The draw placed Argentina into Group J alongside Austria, Algeria, and debutants Jordan.
The holders and Austria both stormed out of the blocks with opening wins, with Argentina toppling Algeria thanks to a Lionel Messi hat-trick, and Austria overcame Jordan 3-1. And the Albiceleste built on that by winning the key matchup against Austria, with Messi scoring another two goals.
Jordan’s 1-2 defeat to Algeria then meant not only that they were eliminated from contention, but also that the current champions sealed first place.
Now, Austria and Algeria will both play for their lives in the second-place decider.

World Cup 2026 Group J Fixtures
Group J opened up with a clash between Argentina and Algeria, which the former won 3-0 in a game that saw Lionel Messi score a hat-trick to draw level with Miroslav Klose’s record tally of 16 World Cup goals.
Austria then locked horns with debutants Jordan, who they eventually beat 3-1 with their record-scorer Marko Arnautovic securing the spoils in injury-time.
Matchday Two started with Argentina beating Austria in what was the biggest game of the group until that point. Jordan and Algeria met in the other fixture in a game that Les Fennecs severely underperformed, but got the win regardless.
The final Group I games take place at the same time on Sunday 28th June. Jordan take on Argentina and Algeria play Austria – the latter with huge ramifications in the final group rankings.
