United States finished top of Group D at the 2026 World Cup, securing their spot in the knockout stages with two wins from three.
The co-hosts were joined in Group D by Australia, Paraguay and Turkey — the latter securing their spot via the play-offs.
And the Stars and Stripes were one of the first teams to book their spot in the knockout stages, with two wins from their opening two games. They knew they would finish top after two matches too, due to the new head-to-head tiebreaker. At that same time, Turkey had been eliminated, again due to head-to-head.
It went down to Paraguay vs Australia on the final day, with both sides looking for qualification to the knockout stages. A draw saw both qualify, with Australia in second and Paraguay as one of the best third-palced teams.

World Cup 2026 Group D Results
United States opened their tournament with a big win over South American side Paraguay, a statement of intent. Australia matched them with a victory, beating Turkey in their first game.
The second round of fixtures saw United States win the battle for top spot, beating Australia 2-0 thanks to two goals in the first half. Turkey’s tournament ended in the second round, beaten 1-0 by Paraguay, consigning them to the bottom of the group.
With top spot already secured, United States rotated for their final group game and felt to a late defeat to Turkey. Australia and Paraguay played out a goalless draw that saw both sides qualify for the knockout stages.
