Uzbekistan make their World Cup debut on Thursday when they take on Colombia in a key Group K encounter.

Portugal look to be the standout nation in what is otherwise a wide-open Group K. The two nations competing in this fixture, along with DR Congo, will all fancy their chances of following their European opponents into the knockout round.

Our PredictionOdds & BookmakerConfidenceWhy We’re Backing It
Luis Diaz 3+ Shots on Target3/1 @ Betfred
(25%)
⭐⭐⭐⭐Díaz arrives at this World Cup as one of the most dangerous wide forwards in European football. He registered 85 shots on goal across 32 Bundesliga appearances for Bayern in 2025-26 — an average of 2.66 per game – with 37 hitting the target. His involvement in a shot every 16 minutes on the pitch is an extraordinary rate. Against a deep Uzbekistan back five, Colombia will dominate the ball and create repeated wide situations – the exact conditions that generate Díaz’s best moments. He drove 19 runs into the penalty area per game in the Champions League this season. Uzbekistan will defend deep and surrender territory from the first whistle. At the Azteca with Colombia pushing for an early statement win, Díaz will carry significant volume throughout the 90 minutes – making three or more shots on target a very realistic outcome.
Correct Score – 1-19/1 @ AK Bets
(10%)
⭐⭐The 1-1 correct score sits at a generous price but carries genuine statistical backing. Colombia conceded 18 goals across 18 CONMEBOL qualifying matches – the fifth-worst defensive record of any qualifier – suggesting Uzbekistan can find the net at the Azteca. Shomurodov carries 44 international goals and scored 22 times in 33 Süper Lig matches this season – he is a constant threat on the counter. Colombia will control the ball and dominate territory, but their qualifying record shows they routinely drop points against organised opposition. Uzbekistan lost to Canada and the Netherlands by a single goal in their final warm-up matches, suggesting they can stay competitive against quality sides. The altitude in Mexico City slows the tempo and compresses scoring. A Colombia goal feels inevitable – but Shomurodov punishing one defensive lapse on the counter is an equally realistic outcome.

How both teams go into Uzbekistan vs Colombia

Uzbekistan

Uzbekistan make history at the 2026 World Cup – becoming the first Central Asian nation ever to reach the finals. The achievement deserves enormous respect. They lost just one of 16 qualifying matches, scoring 27 goals and conceding only 11 across the second and third rounds of AFC qualifying. Qatar’s last-gasp winner in the 12th minute of stoppage time was the only defeat. Their pre-tournament friendly form reinforces the same message – they held Canada at 0-0 until the 58th minute before losing 2-0, and went down 2-1 to the Netherlands only via a last-gasp penalty.

Cannavaro has built a resilient, compact side that defends deep, transitions quickly and stays competitive for long periods against superior opposition. Group K – featuring DR Congo and Portugal – looks extremely tough. Their realistic target is DR Congo on Matchday 2, where a win could keep the knockout dream alive. Reach the Round of 32 and Uzbekistan write a new chapter in Central Asian football history.

Colombia

Colombia return to the World Cup after missing out in Qatar 2022 – and they arrive in a far stronger position. Lorenzo’s side finished third in CONMEBOL qualifying, behind only Argentina and Ecuador, securing their place with a match to spare after a 3-0 win over Bolivia. They scored 28 goals in qualifying – the second-highest tally in South America – and beat both Brazil and Argentina on home soil during the campaign.

Their pre-tournament form tells an equally encouraging story. Colombia beat Costa Rica 3-1 and Jordan 2-0 in their final two warm-up matches, arriving at the Azteca in good rhythm. Earlier defeats to France and Croatia in March carry far less weight than those results. Lorenzo controls possession better than almost any other South American coach – Colombia held the ball 56.8% of the time in qualifying, second only to Argentina and Brazil. Group K pairs them with Uzbekistan, DR Congo and Portugal – a draw that offers a very realistic route to the knockout stages.

Uzbekistan team news

Uzbekistan travel to Mexico City with one confirmed absentee. Defender Husniddin Aliqulov suffered an ACL injury in January and does not make the squad. Beyond that, Cannavaro has a near fully fit group to select from. Jaloliddin Masharipov carries a back injury concern and could miss out, which would hand a starting spot to Oston Urunov behind the striker.

Cannavaro looks set to deploy a compact 3-4-2-1, with Abdukodir Khusanov anchoring a back three alongside Rustam Ashurmatov and Abdulla Abdullaev. Otabek Shukurov and Akmal Mozgovoy should screen the midfield in front of them. Abbosbek Fayzullaev starts in the attacking midfield role behind captain Eldor Shomurodov.

Colombia team news

Colombia head into Thursday’s opener in the best possible shape. Lorenzo names a full 26-man squad with no confirmed injury or suspension concerns. That gives him a genuine selection headache in several positions – a welcome problem heading into a must-win opener. The goalkeeper spot looks like a straight fight between David Ospina and Camilo Vargas.

Daniel Muñoz locks down the right-back role, with Johan Mojica on the left. Davinson Sánchez and Jhon Lucumí should form the central defensive partnership, though Yerry Mina pushes hard for inclusion. Jefferson Lerma and Richard Ríos anchor the midfield double pivot. Captain James Rodríguez pulls the strings behind Luis Díaz and Jhon Arias in the attacking positions. Luis Suarez should lead the line.

Head-to-Head

This is the first meeting between these two nations. This adds a further element of intrigue to a match that will already catch the eye of many.

Can Uzbekistan grab derby glory or will Colombia prevail?

This is one of the trickiest games to make a selection for in matchday one. Uzbekistan are somewhat of an unknown quantity while Colombia are inconsistent at best.

We think that the Asian side will get something from the game and we’re backing a 1-1 correct score at 9/1 with AK Bets.

We also like the look of Luis Diaz having 3+ shots on target at 3/1 with Betfred. The Bayern forward loves a shot and this looks great boosted value.
